“I’ll just give you guys a…”

Kaden walked into the dining area, and she stared at me as if the sound of my voice was going to make her snap.

I exited to the stairs.

I’d barely made it to the upstairs hallway when her screaming filled the air.

“I want her gone!”

Kaden’s voice was more of a hum, completely indiscernible. He wasn’t much of a screamer, unfortunately for me, since I’d have to try to fill in the blanks. My guess was he said no, simply because I’d already tried to leave on my own.

“Why can’t you get rid of her?” she yelled. “You’re not trying hard enough.”

I had to agree with her on this one. I felt like he hadn’t tried hard enough either. Seemed to me that Antoinette and I had finally come to something we could agree upon.

“If you don’t get rid of her, I’m leaving,” she yelled.

More muffled noise.

“I see the way you look at her.”

She did? And how was he looking at me, exactly? Had there been more looks like the ones tonight? Had I been bumbling around, such a mess, that I’d missed them?

More muffled talking.

“You’re going to regret this,” she said. “I was the best thing you ever had.” Her voice was louder and clearer, as if she were moving closer to the front of the house, where the sound traveled easier.

I edged as close as I could get without being seen.

“I’m sorry that you feel that way. I never meant to hurt you,” Kaden said.

His calmness in the face of her wrath was a code every woman alive could break:I’m sorry I hurt you, but I’m fine with the way things went down, and if they happen to end, I won’t be devastated. Or more bluntly,I didn’t give a shit about us. You were nothing but a good time.

“Can I walk you out?” he said.

The blows just kept on coming.

“No. I’m fine on my own,” she replied.

Not a bad comeback. It would’ve been better if she hadn’t hung on like a desperado for that last… How long had she been with him? Plus, of course, the scene tonight was hard to come back from.

She slammed the door so loudly that it nearly shook the house.

Chapter Twenty-Seven

Lavender? It had never been my color, but maybe I hadn’t given it enough of a chance. This dress, its silky smoothness, the way it wound over one shoulder and with almost carved-out flesh here and there, was enough to brave the pastel world. It was enough without being too much. It was elegance and sexiness without looking like I tried too hard. Plus, it would go spectacularly well with the new pair of heels I’d spotted.

My cell rang from the lounge area, and I jumped. Was someone calling me?

“Hello?” I answered, breathless from my run out of the closet room. It wouldn’t do anyone any good to know how much time I was spending in there. As it was, they might’ve been catching on. There might’ve been a comment or two dropped about myhappy placerecently.

“I need you to be ready to go to a party in two hours,” Kaden said.

“What kind?” I asked. Would it be appropriate for that dress?

“Cocktail attire.”

I hummed, as if I weren’t already half sold. That lavender dress was getting its day.
