“I don’t even know what or who Leif is,” I said as we sat at a table out front of my workshop. My forge burned nearby. We’d ordered Chinese delivery as we’d talked, and throughout the last hour, Mrak hadn’t returned. Or at least, he hadn’t appeared. I wasn’t sure how long it would take the ward’s presence here to wear off. “He’s definitely not just a cop or demon hunter. He’s tied to this much more closely.”

Willa nodded. “I agree. I can look into him if you want.”

I raised an eyebrow. “You can do that?”

“I’ve got friends in the witch community,” she said before sipping her tea. “If he’s also a witch, they’ll know. I’ve also picked up some hacking skills. I used to be good at it before Lazarus.”

I chuckled some. We all used to have lives before Lazarus. I was glad Willa was able to reclaim some of her own. “You think you can find information on Leif?”

“I do.” She stood abruptly and finished her tea. “I’ll start looking now. Besides, I should go before your entity returns to you. I figure he won’t like it very much if we’re discussing him.”

“No,” I said as I stared out the front window. “Probably not.”

“Be safe,” she said as she hugged me.

I hugged her back. “You too.”

Willa made her way to the door. “I’ll call you tomorrow with what I find.”

“Thank you.”

She left.

I’d thought that once I was alone after talking things out with Willa, I would feel better about everything. That I’d have some clearer thoughts on Mrak and Leif, on Hunter’s dead body and the times Mrak had taken over my body.

But it wasn’t Willa I had to talk to. It was Mrak. Which meant waiting for whenever he could return.

Or whenever hewantedto.
