I barely had time to think about that before an awful, croaking sound emanated from Leif. He was still alive.

I gasped but fought the urge to run to him. Just moments ago, I’d thought of killing him to protect Mrak and me.

“Just… trying… to help,” he managed to get out. His voice was wracked with pain. It twisted something inside of me, opening a hole for regret and guilt.

I shoved it down. There wasn’t time right now for emotions like that when Cassius might send more vampires after me.

“You can help me by telling me how to more readily open a portal to Kithonia,” I replied as I knelt beside him. “Maybe I can even bring your sister back.”

I wasn’t sure why I’d said that. But in my heart, I knew I would if given the chance. If she didn’t want to be in Kithonia, if she was trapped there by monsters like Mrak’s brother, she should be able to return home.

“Death,” Leif croaked. He tried to push himself up but fell right back to the pavement with a groan, his face against the ground. “A lot… of it…”

Or so he kept saying.

“Thank you,” I said as I stood and began walking back downtown, a new idea beginning to form. If death was the answer, I knew exactly where to start.

“Don’t,” was the last thing I heard from Leif as I walked away.
