CHAPTER 4

Sam

My phone dings and I Ecstatically check the text from Chris.

“Don’t forget your swimsuit ;)”

I smile, setting my phone back on my bed. I already have my suit in the overnight duffle Ipacked. It was one of the first things I threw in. Chris’ pool has been calling my name ever since I left his home to move back to my dad’s.

When my dad asked earlier, I told him I was spending the weekend at a friend’s house. Technically not a lie because Chris is a friend. He’s just also more than that.

Even if it was a lie, how many lies has he told me? My dad has been evading questions for over a week. I know he thinks it’s for my protection. And maybe it’s for the best. But my lies are for his protection. If he knew where I was going to be this weekend, he’d have a heart attack.

That’s exactly why I can’t tell him about the paperwork I found. If dad had to either tell me or keep another secret, I think he’d finally go mad. It’s not time to talk to him about the Cater’s yet. I need to find more information first.

And… maybe this is why Chris says I need a break from things. All the stress is finally getting to me. As I drive to his place, I tell myself I’m going to try and not think about it for the rest of the weekend.

Everyone is safe, I keep repeating in my head. I can take the weekend off. A weekend to myself. I know it’s going to be easier said than done, as I pull into Chris’ driveway.

I grab my bag from the back and slunk it over my shoulder. I’m already giddy with anticipation. It’s hard to hide the smile on my face. But the grin folds into a confused frown as I step through the petal-filled entryway. Pink and red flower petals lay out a path before me.

I toss my bag onto the floor as I follow them, when I can see into the backyard through the large glass doors, I notice bright, twinkling lights illuminating the evening sky.

Cautiously, I make my way outside and watch the lights bounce in the reflection of the pool and hot tub.

Chris is standing near the small outdoor patio area holding two margaritas.

“Hey gorgeous.” My stomach flips just hearing his voice. “You like it?” He looks just as excited as I do.

“You did all this? For me?” I grab the drink he offers to me.

“Of course, it is. You needed some time to relax, and I needed a reason to get you in that hot tub.” He winks at me and my heart stops.

After I get changed, I look at myself in the mirror. There’s a roll on my hips over the sliver of blue fabric. My breasts are perfectly suited for the triangle pieces on my chest. I’ve had the swimsuit for a few years now, but I’m always surprised at how well it fits.

When Chris sees me, he’s mesmerized. I watch his eyes bounce up and down my body as I make my way into the hot tub.

“You look… I mean… you’re gorgeous.” He raises his brows.

“Thank you.” I can’t help but smile back. We’re both beaming from ear to ear as if this is the first time, we’ve seen each other with so little clothing. But I’d recognize that pattern of hair on his chest anywhere. The subtle lines that chisel his pecs.

The water feels good against my muscles. I instantly relax. It’s cool outside in the evening sky, so every time I lift my arms, a chill goes up to my shoulders. I shiver.

“Are you cold?... in the hot tub?” He smirks, his brows raised in teasing confusion.

“Just when I take my hands out! It’s colder tonight than I thought it would be.”

Chris scoots closer to me and wraps me in his arms. His warmth envelops me like a weighted blanket. I relax into him. This is the safest and most comfortable I’ve felt in weeks. Being here with him is like a dream. The lights around us glisten on the water, its reflection changing with every move we make.

“This is beautiful, I truly mean it. I don’t know why we weren’t out here every night when I was staying here.”

He looks past the surface of the water, clearly looking down my body. “Oh trust me, I thought about it.”

I chuckle and playfully jab at his chest with a fist. “Oh, really? Could have fooled me. Didn’t seem like you were trying very hard to get me in here. I’m always down for relaxing in the hot tub.”

I climb over his legs to rest my knees on either side of him. My hand rests on top of his swim trunks as I kiss him. His hands raise up to support my back as he brings his lips down my neck. My hand moves around his trunks as I feel him begin to harden against me. I want him, and the desire in his eyes reminds me of how much he wants me too. My tongue explores his mouth as I let my hands wander up and down his chiseled body to his shoulders.

I shiver as they exit the water. The crisp air accompanied by Chris’ teeth scraping the side of my neck sends a shock through my body. I want more, but he stops.
