Awesome.

I bite my cheek and type a not totally bitchy response.

Me: Okay. Have a great time tonight.

And… no response.

My chest tightens.Thisfeels like the Davey the boys warned me about. And a Davey I don’t have a desire to be with. But I’m not just gonna dump him. I’ll talk to him about it.

Whenever I see him.

Great, now I’m grumpy.

I open my texts again.

Me: Hey, what are you doing today?

Ace: About to head to Joel’s. Why?

Me: Oh, okay, have fun.

Ace: WHY?

Me: Just bored. Wanted to hang out.

He doesn’t respond immediately, so I get up, wash my face, and get dressed. I’m stepping out of my closet when there’s a knock on the window. I unlock it and slide it up, and a second later, Aaron is standing in my room.

“What’s wrong?” he asks.

“Nothing. Have fun hanging with Joel.”

He grabs my arm and pulls me to him. He braces my upper arms with his hands and dips his head down to look into my eyes. “Don’t lie to me.”

“Fine. Davey blew me off. And I was thinking it’s been a while since we hung out.”

He smiles softly. “Come with me to Joel’s.”

“Ooh, a pity invite. As fun as that sounds—”

“It’s not a pity invite. We’re hanging out and watching movies. No one else was free, so it was gonna be us. You should come too. We’re gonna order tons of wings later for lunch.”

I squint at him. “And ranch dressing? And garlic knots.”

He smiles brightly. “Definitely. Come on. Please? I miss you.”

I can’t help but smile at that. “Okay. I’ve missed you, too.”

I walk back into my closet and grab Aaron’s baseball hoodie and throw it on. He points at it and tilts his head. “When the hell did you steal that?”

I stifle a laugh. “Like two years ago, Ace. What can I say? It’s cozy.”

He gives me an adorable smile and says, “Can’t complain. I’ve always loved seeing you in shirts with my last name on the back.”

We stare at each other for a moment, his words hanging there as tension fills up the room.

Nope.

I clear my throat. “Oh, I know. Now, let’s get to Joel’s. I’m already starving.”
