“Let’s grab breakfast sandwiches from the bakery first.”

“Sounds perfect, Ace.”

I’m laughing hysterically at the terrible British accent Joel has been using, quoting practically every line fromThunderball, our fourth James Bond movie of the day.

We’ve plowed through all of our wings and garlic knots, and have spent most of our time laughing. I needed a day like this. It’s been a long time since I’ve hung out with just Aaron and Joel. It’s interesting how the dynamic changes depending on which of us are together. It’s usually the most relaxed when I’m with Joel and Mackie. But with Joel and Aaron, it’s goofy and funny and we’re always laughing. Maybe it’s good that Davey didn’t want to hang out. I’m starting to wonder if we’ve been spending too much time together because I’ve missed days like these.

My phone goes off, and I grab it, seeing a picture from Sarah of her with Gram and Grandpa.

“How’s she doing?” Joel asks as I show them the picture.

“She’s hurting, but she knows it was the right decision.”

“It surprised the hell out of me,” Aaron says. “I thought they were gonna end up married.”

“They used to talk about that stuff, but Sarah realized there was something missing. And I give her a lot of credit for that. It takes a lot of strength to end a relationship that’s not quite right, but you could easily live in forever.”

“It does,” Aaron agrees.

“Well, she’s always been strong,” Joel says.

Aaron’s phone goes off for the five hundredth time today.

“What is going on?” Joel complains.

Aaron shakes his head and sighs, tossing his phone aside. “Marisol has become… crazy.” He groans. “That sounds awful, and it makes me seem like a jackass. But she needs a constant play-by-play of my life. And I hate it. I don’t like feeling controlled.”

“So break up with her.” Joel shrugs.

“Maybe I should… I don’t know.”

I elbow him in the side. “Right there with ya. Only you know, Davey is ghosting me rather than checking in on me every second.”

My phone rings.

“Or maybe not,” Joel says, handing it to me.

“Hey, Davey.”

“Hey, where are you?”

“I’m at Joel’s with him and Aaron. Why?”

“I’m at your house.”

I stand up suddenly. “What?”

He sighs. “I was trying to surprise you, but of course you aren’t even here.”

“Well, I’m not gonna sit around and wait for you to show up. I’m not that desperate,” I sass as Joel and Aaron look at me with wide eyes.

“Will you come home so we can… talk? Go out? Please?”

I glance back at Aaron and Joel. “Fine. I’ll be there in a minute.”

“Thanks. Bye.”

I hang up, annoyed. “Apparently, Davey is at my house waiting to whisk me off for some surprise date.”
