He helps me out and we head inside. It smells like cheap beer and sweaty guys. Not exactly my favorite way to spend the night, but whatever. Davey leads us through the party, grabbing us both some water. At least he isn’t trying to drink.

We’re chatting with some friends of his when one of his closest friends, Miller, swaggers over. I don’t like Miller very much because he’s kind of a dick, but I make nice for Davey’s sake.

“Hey, man.”

“Hey,” Davey says, looking uncomfortable.

“Sorry about earlier. But these two hot chicks wanted to hang, and—”

“It’s fine,” Davey says quickly.

I tilt my head to look at him.

“Nah, we were supposed to pregame for this. Here, let me catch you up.” He calls to one of the girls nearby to bring them some beers.

I grab Davey’s elbow and pull him a step away. “You were supposed to be pre-gaming with Miller for this party today? And he canceled on you? That’s why you came to take me out?”

“Rae—”

“Were you always planning to surprise me tonight? Or did you decide at the last minute because you didn’t have anyone to drink with?”

“It’s not like—”

“It’s a yes or no question.”

He doesn’t answer. He just stares at me. Then he looks down.

“Take me home.”

“Rae, no. Let’s go somewhere—”

“Take. Me. Home.”

He nods and leads me out of the house. I cross my arms over my chest and look out the window as we ride in silence back to my house.

When we get there, I don’t wait for him to open my door. I hop out and go straight for the gate to the stairs.

“Rae, wait. Please. I did want to see you tonight.”

“Not as much as you wanted to party!” I yell. “Then you took me there, anyway. Gross.”

He sighs sadly. “I had a lot of fun tonight. And I realized it was way better than drinking with Miller ever would have been. I’m sorry I didn’t choose you in the first place—”

“Then you gave me shit for spending the day with my friends.”

“I’m sorry, okay? I’m sorry. I realized my plans were stupid. I missed you. I—I loved being with you tonight.”

I shake my head. “I did too. Until you made me look like an idiot.”

He gently cups my cheek. “I really am sorry.”

“Well, sorry is just a word until there’s action to back it up. Stop pushing me away and actually spend time with me again, and maybe I’ll believe that.”

He nods solemnly. “Okay.”

I put in the code for the lock. “Goodnight, Davey.”

“Night.”
