“Well, that’s nice,” Joel says.

I glance at Aaron. “Yeah, I’m not sure it is. Anyway, thanks for today. I’ll see you guys later.”

“’Kay. Later, Rae Rae.”

“Have fun,” Aaron says softly, but he looks disappointed. And I don’t blame him. We were having a good time.

“Bye, guys.”

I’m grumpy again as I walk across my backyard toward my driveway. Davey is leaning against his truck. He looks up when he hears my footsteps.

“Hi.”

“Hey,” I say. My voice is soft but tight.

“Look, I’m sorry I—” He stops short and tilts his head. “Are you serious? You’re wearing his shirt?”

I look down. “No. I’m wearingmyshirt.”

“His name is on it,” he sasses.

“Fine, itwashis shirt. I stole it two years ago because it’s so freaking comfortable. I was in a bad mood this morning because my boyfriend blew me off. I wanted to be cozy. Then two of my best friends offered to cheer me up. So we watched James Bond and ate chicken wings. It was super sexy.”

“Rae—”

“Don’t. You want me to wear one of your sweatshirts? Give me one. I would. No questions asked. Don’t play jealous about this. I don’t want to deal with that bullshit. I have one of Joel’s too. Wanna see it?”

He sighs. “No. I’m sorry. Look, it’s stupid. I was excited to see you, you weren’t here. And I know, you shouldn’t be waiting around for me.” He smiles softly and steps in closer. “You’re way too awesome for that. Probably too awesome for me.”

He gently kisses my lips.

“Definitely,” I whisper. A smile pulls at my lips, betraying the frustration I’m feeling. “Okay, let me go change.”

He smacks my butt as I walk away. “Hurry.”

I run upstairs and get ready. And even though I’m still a little mad, I want to give him a chance.

When I come back down, I’m dressed in a flowy floral wrap dress with black leggings and knee-high boots.

Davey whistles. “Damn, you clean up nice.”

“Why, thank you.”

He reaches in his truck and pulls out a bouquet of flowers. “These are for you. I’m sorry.”

“They’re very pretty. Thank you.”

He opens the door and helps me in, and that melts me a little bit. Hopefully tonight will be fun after all.

Davey took me out for Italian, then we went for a walk before heading to the overlook. We kissed in his car for a while and got pretty hot and heavy.

By which I mean we nearly had sex in the front seat of his truck. But after some serious grinding, we pulled apart, deciding it would be best not to screw in his car where anyone could see us. We’re heading back toward town when we see a bunch of cars lined up. I realize it’s a party at Chuck Andrews’s house. He’s another guy on the baseball team.

“Hey, wanna stop?” Davey asks.

I mean, I don’t really like parties, but I don’t mind the baseball boys. “Sure, just don’t leave me alone, okay?”

He kisses my cheek as he pulls onto the edge of the road. “Never.”
