And that sucks.

Why am I still with him?

Great question. Really, it is. I don’t have the answer. We’ll probably break up in the summer anyway, so why—

“Hey, you in there?”

I blink at Aaron. How long did I zone out for?

He chuckles and grabs my hand, pulling me down to the deck. He slides into the sleeping bag, then puts his arm out for me to join him. I swallow hard, then shimmy in next to him.

“Now, what’s wrong?”

“Nothing. Trying to figure out what I’m doing with Davey.”

“Ah.”

“How are things with Marisol?”

He gives me a knowing look.

“Still wanting to know where you are every second?”

He nods. “Let’s just say I’m glad it’s after midnight, so she’s assuming I’m asleep.”

“Why do you stay with her?” I ask. Mostly because I’m trying to figure out why I’m still with Davey.

He sighs. “I wish I knew. I don’t know. It feels like what I’m supposed to do. Our relationship is fine. We enjoy time together, especially when we’re alone and just relaxing. But then there’s all the time we aren’t together that—”

“Sucks?”

“Yeah.”

“As usual, we do everything together.”

He laughs at that. “You know, being in this sleeping bag with you makes that sound kinda dirty.”

I give his shoulder a shove.

“We should make our wishes,” he says, looking up at the sky. “You go first. It’s your birthday. And remember, your wish is extra powerful.”

I smile and nod. He points to a bright star. I close my eyes and take a deep breath. I hold it for longer than usual, trying to figure out what to wish for. Then I open them, let out the breath, and make my wish.I wish I’d find real love.

Whoa. That just came out.Should I break up with Davey?

I shake my head. I am not gonna do this tonight.

I squeeze Aaron’s hand, letting him know it’s his turn.

He makes his wish, then turns to look at me. “Not to cut this short, but I’m tired as hell.”

I’m forcing back a yawn as he says it. “Me too. Are you, um, gonna spend the night?”

He inhales sharply, but smiles. Then he laughs. “Yeah. On the trundle bed.”

We both laugh hysterically at that, then climb out of the sleeping bag and head back inside.

Once we’re both settled in bed, I close my eyes and try to sleep. It’s weird with Aaron on my trundle bed. It feels awkward. But I know it wouldn’t be okay for him to sleep in my bed.
