“Hey,” Aaron’s voice cuts through the darkness and immediately puts me at ease.

“Yeah?”

“Why… why do you stay with Davey?”

My breath hitches. Only fair to answer it, he answered me. But the heaviness of this conversation has settled in the room.

“Uh, I don’t know. Same reason you’re still with Marisol, I guess. There are hard parts, but it can be good with him, too.”

His hand slides up and catches mine. “Rae…”

My heart slams in my chest. “Yeah?”

He lets out a soft sigh. “Maybe we shouldn’t sell ourselves short. It could begoodwith someone else, too.”

I’m trying not to sound like I’m breathing as heavy as I actually am.

It could be good with someone else, too.

Like him?

No.No.This is crazy. Hard pass. We’re not going down this road.

Besides, we’re both with other people.

For now.

Shut up, brain.Shut. Up.

“You’re probably right about that,” I whisper.

He shifts on the trundle bed but doesn’t let go of my hand. “Happy birthday, Beautiful.”

“Thanks, Ace. Night.”

“Goodnight.”

And then I fall asleep, one arm hanging off the bed, hand wrapped around Aaron’s.

I’m snuggled on the couch in the front room by the window, reading. I love getting lost in a good book. Feeling the character’s pain and happiness, enjoying the ride as they find themselves or fall in love. This series is one of my favorites about a girl whose mother is an actress. She’s being stalked by someone obsessed with her mother, and she goes to hide out at an elite boarding school. There she meets the love of her life. Chaos and drama ensue. And I love it.

“Having a low-key birthday?” Mom asks, walking into the room.

I close my book and set it on the table. “I guess so. It’s kinda nice. Quiet.”

Mom narrows her eyes at me. “You’ve got your thinking face on.”

Okay, she’s not wrong. I wasreading, but really, I was zoning out and thinking.

“What’s going on?”

I let out a sigh. “Do you think Aaron and I are meant to be?”

Her eyes widen and she stares at me. “Wow. That’s a heck of a question. Where did that come from?”

“Everyone else.” I shake my head as I laugh. “I don’t know. All our friends think we’re supposed to be together. Davey and Marisol seem to think we’re having some secret affair. And I’m… not sure of anything anymore.”

“Do you have feelings for him?” Mom asks.
