“Hey,” he answers, sounding bummed.

“You okay?”

He sighs. “I don’t know.”

“You’re home?”

“Yeah.”

“Two minutes. Bye.”

“Bye.”

I look over at Miles and Joel.

“I gotta go. Aaron and Marisol broke up. I’ll be back later.”

“Hey, Rae…” Miles starts, sounding like he wants to apologize.

“It’s fine,” I say. “I promise.”

I hurry out of Miles’s room, out of his house, and across the street to Aaron’s.

I don’t bother knocking on his front door or his room.

When I walk in, he’s pacing across his room. He stops short. I walk over and immediately pull him into a tight hug.

He squeezes me hard.

“How are you?”

“I don’t know. I liked her a lot, but I didn’t love her. Breakups never feel good.” He pauses for a moment and loosens his grip on me, but I don’t let go of him. He runs his hand over my hair. “It’s not like I was madly in love with her. I’ll be okay,” he says with a chuckle. And I know what he’s getting at.

“Maybe I need a hug,” I say.

His grip on me tightens again.

“Davey?”

I nod against his chest.

He steps back and grabs my hand, then pulls me down onto the bed with him. We both lie back and stare at the ceiling.

His fingers are loosely intertwined with mine. Without looking over at me, he asks, “What happened with Davey?”

“Tell me what happened with you and Marisol first.”

He sighs.

“I don’t know. You know how possessive she was being. And then the jealousy kicked in too and it all became more than I could handle. I don’t want to be in a relationship with someone who doesn’t trust or respect me. When I ended it, she basically asked if it was…”

“Yeah?” I ask when he trails off.

“If it was because of you.”

“Shit. Well. We’re kinda in the same boat. I just haven’t broken up with Davey yet. And his version of dealing with it is being jealous, insecure, pushing me away, and then flirting with other girls.”

“I’m sorry. You deserve more than that.”
