It occurs to me that Davey doesn’t even know I’m here.
I’m about to take a step forward when I realize I didn’t make myself look awesome before the party. I’m sure I lookfine, but I want to look better than that.
I look at Trevor. “Hold this,” I say, pulling off my sweatshirt so I’m only in a tight V-neck T-shirt and shorts. I tug it down so it reveals more of my boobs.
I pull my hair out of the ponytail it’s in and give it a nice tousle.
“Better?” I ask Trevor.
“Definitely,” he says with a playful grin.
I give him a nod and walk—no, strut. Istrut—over to Davey.
Bold.
I clear my throat. He looks at me like he’s seen a ghost and immediately drops his arms off the girls’ shoulders.
They both take me in.
“Who are you?” Legs asks.
I give her a giant, fake smile. “His girlfriend,” I say.
“Girlfriend?” Boobs mutters in some combination of disbelief and amusement.
“Actually, no. I’m hisex-girlfriend.”
“Baby,” he says, reaching for me.
“Don’t,” I say, yanking my arm back, “I told you from the beginning, I wouldn’t be this girl. The one who gets played and cheated on. I don’t care what your reasons are. I deserve a hell of a lot more than this. So go ahead, sleep with Legs or Boobs or whoever you want because I’m done. We’re done. Okay?”
“No, I—”
“I’m sorry, I phrased that as a question when I shouldn’t have. I wish it had been different. I wish you would’ve trusted me. I wish you would’ve kept being the guy I know youcanbe. Hell, I hope you still will. But it won’t be for me. I’m done, Davey. Done with you. Done with our relationship. And done with this bullshit. Have a great night. I’m out.”
I turn on my heel and walk back to the house. Trevor looks at me. “That was fucking awesome, Rae.”
“Thank you. Now I need a drink.”
My phone goes off several times in rapid succession.
Sarah: Did you just break up with Davey?!
Aaron: Are you okay? Seriously. I’m right here. Tell me if you need me.
Joel: Was he hitting on those girls? I swear, I’m gonna punch him in the face.
Miles: He’s a fucking asshole.
I groan and shove my phone back in my pocket as Trevor looks at me with wide eyes. “I also need to stay away from the boys. And Sarah. I do not want to be fawned over right now. I’d like to punch something.”
Trevor gently holds out my sweatshirt. “Hopefully not me.”
I shrug and take my sweatshirt back. “For now. The night’s young.”
He laughs and throws an arm around me.
I pull out my phone.
