I decided we’d have a low-key night and head down to our favorite burger place. Which isn’t technically a place. Our town has a large number of food trucks for being a small town. Actually, they tend to move around the area, which is a bunch of smaller towns around a medium-sized post-industrial city. Tonight, one of our favorite food trucks,Burgers and Sh!t, is on the main drag here in Ida, a few blocks from our houses, so that’s where we’re headed.

Well, I didn’t tell him that. I want to surprise him, since he’s surprised me so much this week.

As soon as he realizes where we’re going, he’s super excited. He orders his favorite, “Burger and Grease,” which is a burger smothered in caramelized onions, tons of bacon, and jack cheese. How he can eat the whole thing and not vomit is beyond me. One bite, and my stomach is doing flips. But hey, whatever. I order a “Burger and Rings,”which is a burger with loads of thin, fried onion rings and that horseradishy-type sauce that you get with one of those blooming onion things. It’s delicious. We share a basket of seasoned fries, and we can barely move by the time we’re done.

We walk down by the river, then take the slow walk home, trying to walk off some of the calories we ate before heading back to his house.

No, not like that.

Just, you know, to hang.

And I maybe have a little surprise for him.

No, not like that.

When we get up to his room and he swings the door open, he’s surprised to see a basket of goodies on his bed.

First is a container full of his favorite snacks and sodas for when he’s gaming. The next is a tray of cupcakes, based off his favorite chocolate fudge cake with vanilla cream cheese frosting, that I made last night. The last is an envelope with a note and two tickets to the local triple A team’s, the Binghamton Mets, season opener.

“What’s all this?” he asks, eyes lighting up.

“Open the envelope.”

He pulls it open, and the first thing he sees are the baseball tickets.

He beams at me. “These are awesome. I can’t wait.”

“And if you get your license by then, you can drive us. No parents needed at all.” I wiggle my eyebrows at him.

“That would be fucking amazing.”

He pulls the note out and reads it.

Ace,

I wanted to do something to show you how thankful I am for how special you made this week for me. So, this is a little something for you since you aren’t getting what most guys get on Valentine’s Day. ;)

Love you.

He laughs out loud, then smirks at me, eyes dancing with trouble. “I don’t know… what do most guys get on Valentine’s Day?”

“You’resofunny,” I say, playfully shoving his shoulder.

“What kind of cupcakes are these?”

“Try them and find out. Big bite.”

He takes a giant bite and moans with pleasure. It actually sounds a little dirty. Like you’d think Iwasgiving him what most guys get on Valentine’s Day.

“You filled them with peanut butter?” he asks, clearly in heaven. Aaron loves all things peanut butter and chocolate, and I can’t believe I never thought to add peanut butter to this cake before.

“Good?” I ask, even though his reaction has made thatveryclear.

“Mhmm,” he manages, mouth still full.

He holds it out to me, and I take a little lick of the peanut butter and a tiny bit of cake and frosting into my mouth. Then I make a yummy noise because, honestly, I outdid myself… they are amazing. That’s about when I hear Aaron choke on his cupcake.

I look over at him. “You okay there?”
