He swallows hard and looks at me.

“Uh huh,” he says, running a hand through his hair like he’s flustered.

“What?” I ask.

He shakes his head and clears his throat. “Uh, the way you licked that cake was kinda… sexy. I’m only human, Rae, and I can’t help but notice how hot you are sometimes.”

I laugh out loud. “What, you think I don’t notice that you’re hot?” I ask. “Just because we’re best friends doesn’t mean we can’t notice that the other is attractive.”

He narrows his eyes at me, then he walks over and plants a long, hot kiss on my lips. No tongue. Our mouths are only slightly open, but I feel that whoosh in my stomach from our inexplicable connection—one that is always amplified when we kiss.

When he pulls away, I breathlessly ask, “What was that for?”

“Well, it’s Valentine’s Day, we’re fake dating, and we both admitted we find each other hot, so I figured why not have a sexy, but friendly, best friend sort of kiss.”

I smile wide at him but squint my eyes a little.

“Too bad it’s not acceptable for friends to kiss all the time,” I say with a little wiggle of my eyebrows.

His breath catches but then he smoothly says, “Well, we could if you wanted to.”

“I think that might complicate things,” I say. “But maybe one more time.”

I lean in and kiss him firmly on the lips, grabbing the back of his neck and pulling him to me.

When I pull away, he looks me up and down while smiling. “That was fun. Today was fun. This whole week has been fun.”

“I agree,” I say, wrapping my arms around his neck.

He pulls me in tight against him, and I let out a soft sigh.

“I should probably go home,” I say. “But thank you for this week. It’s been awesome. And the dance Friday will be too.”

“It will.” He kisses my cheek. “See ya later, Beautiful. Thanks for all of this, especially the cupcakes.”

“No problem, Ace.”

I give his hand a squeeze and head home. When I make it back to my room and flip the light on, I see a note hanging on the window.

I open the window and pull it off.

Love note #6

Beautiful,

Sometimes I wish we could stay cuddled in each other’s arms, watching the stars forever. Come outside at 9pm and make some real wishes with me.

P.S. Dress warm.

Ace

I smile to myself and immediately pull my phone out and text him.

Me: Stars, huh? Definitely seems like the perfect end to an amazing Valentine’s Day.

Ace: My thoughts exactly. And it looks like it’ll be a really clear night. So seriously, dress warm.

Me: I’ll bring blankets too.
