There’s a taco truck in our town calledYo Taco!and they make the best tacos.Ever. They are so good. And the owner, Manny, is a huge fan of baseball, so he loves Aaron and has gotten to know us well over the years.

“Manny sent these on the house, by the way.”

“I don’t know how you got food truck owners to love you that much, but I’ll take it.” I laugh and shake my head. “You know, the nurse that took me back to the OR also thought you were my boyfriend.”

“Yeah?”

“Yep. Apparently, we reminded her of her and her husband or something because they were best friends.” I roll my eyes, then take a big breath. I’m not sure if I should tell him this or not, but we’ve never had secrets before so… “It actually… it got inside my brain and when I was first in and out of sleep in recovery, I actually dreamed you were my boyfriend.”

Aaron swallows hard and turns to look at me with wide eyes. “Oh? Is it—was it—were we—”

“Yeah…?”

“Did you like that?”

“Oh, uh, I mean, it was nice—in the dream. Mostly because it was how we always are, but you were kissing me with your tongue, and that was pretty fun.” I smirk at him, and he relaxes a little. “Not trying to date you, Ace. It was just a funny coincidence.”

“So, you’re saying you don’t want to date me?” he asks with a fake pout.

I swat his chest, but then say seriously, “It’s not really about that. I mean, I have a boyfriend. You have a girlfriend. And yet we’re closer than either of us is with them. It seems silly to even think that way. I don’t need you to be my boyfriend when you’re already so much more than that. I’ll keep what we already have.”

He smiles and leans back against the wall. “Good answer. I’m assuming you didn’t tell Davey this dream?”

I chuckle. “Uh, no. That might make him insecure. And I don’t need that.”

We eat in silence for a few minutes.

“Aaron?”

“Yeah?”

“Thanks for being there for me yesterday. You know, Davey said he wished he would’ve been the one who found me and helped me, but I’m glad it was you. Nothing compares to the comfort and safety I have with you. You didn’t have to go to the hospital with me, though. Or stick around last night. So, thank you.”

He smirks at me, but it quickly grows into an uncontainable smile. “Come on, Beautiful. Don’t you know I’d doanythingfor you?”

I look into his eyes. That phrase goes back to those stupid rumors in middle school, when, admittedly, there was more of thatpuppy lovething between us. “Still?”

“Always. Hence the tacos.” He shoots me a wink, and I smile at him.

This is the truth of our relationship. Two people who are always there for each other, no matter what.

And at the end of the day, I think that’s all that matters.
