“Thought what?” Aaron asks, and I can tell he’s getting annoyed.

“That you and—” he pauses again and I suddenly get a horrible feeling about where he’s going with this.

Oh my god. No. Tell me he’s not about to say—

“Did you ever think you’d lose your virginity to Rae?”

My eyes go wide. I have to cover my mouth to keep from gasping. I try to calm my pounding heart because even though I shouldn’t, Isowant to know the answer to this question.

But all I hear is Aaron sputtering.

“I—I—what the fuck kind of question is that?”

“I mean, I think we all kinda thought it might happen that way,” Miles says. “Joel was more invested in it, but…”

I hear him sigh again, and I know he’s running his hands through his hair, trying to calm himself down and find the answer.

“I don’t—I don’t know. That puppy love thing we always had, that was long before I ever thought about losing my virginity. I guess if… if we’d been in that place or near it, I might’ve thought about it. But we aren’t now.”

For whatever reason, my stomach starts to do flip-flops. Because now I’m wondering…what would it have been like to lose it to Aaron?

I’ve never thought of having sex with him. I mean, yeah, I find him attractive. He’s hot as hell and crazy sexy. He’s a good kisser. We have an incredible connection. I’m sure if we had lost it to each other, we’d have let that puppy love blossom. We’d have been together. And I’m sure it would’ve been romantic. He would’ve wanted it perfect for me. He would’ve made sure Ienjoyedmyself. And that connection we have, it probably would’ve made it…phenomenal.

What am I doing to myself? I shake my head, trying to snap myself out of it. No more of this. I stand up and loudly step down onto the second step.

I call out, “Heads up, there’s a girl coming into the man cave.”

“Hey, Rae Rae,” Joel says as I get to the bottom of the stairs.

Joel is standing up, Miles is leaning against the arm of the couch, and Aaron is sitting down in the center.

“Hey,” I say.

Miles narrows his eyes at me. He has this ability to read me that throws me off and annoys me. He tilts his head, then his eyes go a little wide, then he looks at Aaron, then back at me and grins.

He knows.

I don’t know how he got it from looking at me, but he knows.

“You look good, kid,” Miles says to me.

I shake my head at him in disbelief.

I don’t address him, instead I say, “Hey, the girls are on their way, but could I talk to A alone for a minute?”

He looks over at me, already attempting to read my face.

“Yeah, sure,” Joel says. “We’ll meet you guys upstairs.”

“Thanks,” I say.

Once I hear the door shut at the top of the stairs, I walk around the couch so I’m facing him.

“You okay?” he asks me.

I shake my head and laugh a little. “Somehow, it seems, whether we are actually together or not, we do everything together.”

He stares at me, confused. Then his eyes grow wide as he realizes what I’m saying. He slowly blinks a couple of times as he realizes exactly what that means.
