Chapter twelve

We’re Best Friends

Davey’sfingerssqueezeagainstmy ribs, pulling me tighter to him as we walk back toward my block in the crisp winter air, laughing with Aaron and Marisol.

Yeah, we’re walking home from a double date lunch with them. And despite the moment that Aaron and I had last week, we had a lot of fun. What happened last weekend was an off moment. A blip. Both of us feeling vulnerable and emotional about the virginity stuff within the safety of our close friendship.

That’sallit was.

And things are back to normal now.

Thank God.

“It was so cold and Joel’s dumb idea,” I say, laughing.

“And somehow, no matter how dumb it is, we always end up going along with his ideas,” Aaron says, shaking his head.

“So, Joel’s the troublemaker?” Davey asks. “I figured it’d be Miles.”

“No, he’s got the charm,” I say with a grin.

“And the body,” Marisol says with an easy laugh.

“Hey,” Aaron says, squeezing her waist.

“Sorry, I’m just saying. I don’t know how you’re friends with such hot boys or how you’ve never dated them,” she says. Then she eyes me suspiciously, “You haven’t, have you?”

“Uh no. I could never. Never.” Well, not Miles or Joel.

“Have any of you ever?” Davey asks.

I’m strongly avoiding the puppy love topic, and Aaron and me in general. I figure we shouldn’t count since we’re on a double date with each other’s boyfriend and girlfriend right now.

“No. And if they were both single, I could maybe see—”

“Sarah and Joel,” Aaron grins, finishing my thought.

We both laugh.

“But me? No way, I’d kill Miles. Our personalities are so different. And Joel… no. Because,ew, it’s Joel. He’s like my brother.”

I make a dramatic retching noise and everyone laughs.

“What about you, Cooper?” Davey asks.

“No way. I mean, Mackie is way too hippie for me. And Sarah?”

I start laughing hysterically. The idea of the two of them sends me into a fit of giggles.

“You guys—oh my gosh—no, that would never…” I’m laughing too hard to finish my sentence.

“Never, ever,” he agrees as we get back to our block. We pause near Aaron’s house.

“Hey, anyone wanna come back to my house? My mom made this amazing cake yesterday,” I say.

“Which one?” Aaron asks, extremely interested since cake is involved.

“Your favorite. The chocolate fudge with vanilla cream cheese frosting.”
