Aaron’s eyes light up.

Marisol wipes at her face. “Oh my god, am I drooling? That sounds so good. But I have to go home and study for the SATs once more. I’m so nervous.”

“You’ll do great,” Aaron says sweetly, and it makes me smile.

After all the nonsense last week, it’s been nice to see him seem so happy with Marisol. And honestly, I’ve had fun with Davey too. We even had sex again, and it was better. Still notorgasmic, or true love’s… sex. What am I even saying?Anyway, it was fine and fun, and I think that’s enough. Honestly, I think Aaron and I both put way too much pressure on our first times and high school romances.

“I can’t believe they make you come in at seven on a Sunday,” Davey says, shaking his head.

“It’s awful, but it’s what you’ve gotta do for college, I guess. So I’ll have to take a rain check on the cake.”

I nod and look at Davey.

“I promised I’d head to my grandparents’ house and help fix a couple of things. Save me some?” he asks with a sweet smile.

“Of course,” I say, kissing his cheek.

“A—” I stop myself, stuttering, realizing I probably shouldn’t call him Ace, because then he might call me Beautiful and that might make things very weird. I try again. “A? What about you?”

“Definitely, I’ll be over in a few, B—uh—Rae,” he stumbles and I know what he almost calledme.

I quickly look up at Davey, then back at Aaron and say, “We’ll let you guys have a few minutes.”

Marisol waves as we walk away.

I look up at Davey as we walk the few steps to my house and down the side yard toward the back of the house where he’s parked. “And you need to say goodbye to me,” I say flirtatiously.

His mouth meets mine, and he says, “I’d like to do more than that, but here we are, out in the open.”

“What a shame,” I say, snapping my fingers as our feet hit the driveway.

“So, what was that with you and Cooper?” Davey asks, leaning against the side of his car.

“What do you mean?”

“You both had moments where you looked like you wanted to say something else to each other.”

Shit. Of course, he noticed. It wasn’t exactly smooth.

“Oh, uh, I was gonna call him by my nickname for him but decided against it. I didn’t want to upset Marisol. Or you.”

“Me? Why? what’s the name for him? Is it dirty?” he asks with a cheeky grin.

“No,” I say, giving his shoulder a little push, but I can’t shake off the seriousness of this conversation. “I call him Ace because of the first game he pitched in middle school. You remember?”

He nods. “Yeah. We were all fucking shocked when he pitched that perfect game. So, what’s bad about that?”

I take a deep breath. This is gonna suck.

“Well, I was concerned if I called him by my nickname for him he would call me by his nickname for me, which, though it has innocent origins, could be misconstrued.”

Davey’s eyes narrow slightly. “What does he call you?” he asks, voice not so playful anymore.

“Beautiful,” I say as red creeps onto my cheeks.

His eyes go wide.

“There’s a story there,” I say quickly.
