“We can’t do this,” I whispered.

He inched back, so our bodies didn’t touch any longer, his Adam’s apple bobbing up and down. “Better?” He traced the line of my jaw with his finger.

“No. I’m never ‘better’ when you’re so close to me.” Why lie? Although, for some reason, controlling my urges today was easier.

“I know what you mean,” he whispered so softly that I would have missed his words if I hadn’t been completely focused on him.

“Then why?” I whispered back.

A subtle shiver raked his large frame. “Be patient. With me. With us. The time will come.”

“What does that mean?”

“Ready?” he asked, stepping back from me abruptly.

I closed my eyes for a moment to collect myself. A lock of my hair fell over my cheek, and I brushed it back impatiently. “I’m ready.”At least I hope so.
