A few moments passed before he answered. “Lukas was right. You’re right. We should be free to choose our path. But now, with a war brewing, I’m where I want to be. I want to do my part. I want to fight for what I think is right, and after this dark moment has passed, I’ll keep fighting for what is right.”

“Do you mean for the beasts’ freedom?” I whispered.

“Yes.”

The revelation didn’t bring the relief I was expecting, but it only crushed my heart further.

He caressed my cheek ever so gently, his thumb rubbing my bottom lip. “Don’t be sad.”

Rules be damned, but I leaned against his touch. “I’m more scared than sad. Scared to not live the life I want. To not be free. To not have a family one day.”

The space between us sizzled with energy when he edged closer and brushed his lips against mine. “That won’t be your destiny. I promise.”

Before I could say anything or kiss him back, he retreated to his seat, the moment of intimacy broken. The good thing was that my anxiety about flying had been forgotten, replaced by the unbearable fear of being nothing more than a puppet.
