for everyone and that you’re sorry for the pain that causes her, but your life

is your life and you should have the right to live it and make your own

choices.”

“Wait.” Shane dug out his phone from the back pocket of his jeans. “Can

you say that again so I can record it and use it verbatim when the time

comes?”

“You’re horrible!” Kiera couldn’t help but grin.

He stood slowly and held out his arms. Kiera accepted a hug. One of the

few genuine hugs they’d shared in the all the time they were in a fake

relationship together.

“I hope everything works out for you. Really.”

“You too. Don’t be a stranger. We might never have actually been a

boyfriend and girlfriend, but you are a friend.”

Shane winked. “Don’t worry, I won’t disappear. It’s nice to have friends

in high places, and you seriously owe me one for this.” He’d lost the

desperation and sadness from when he’d stepped into the door.

“High places,” Kiera snorted. “I’m not exactly in high places.”

“No, but you have money, and I’m not afraid to call in a favor when the

need arises.”

Kiera rolled her eyes, but she was still smiling after she saw Shane out.

She was smiling when she turned around and walked back into the living

room, but it faded and surprise set in when she found Romi, fully dressed,

sitting down on the co

uch she’d just vacated, staring at Shane’s empty

coffee mug.

Kiera froze, but Romi just leaned forward, picked up Shane’s piece of

toast, and took a bite. “Not bad,” she mused, “even if it is cold.” She looked

up and her gaze locked with Kiera’s. “I heard everything. I take it that was

Shane. He seemed pretty upset, but you were amazing. You calmed him

right down. You were also firm, which I admire.”
