BRAXTON

HOLY. HELL.

Tharion had been my father’s Dragon, and he’d chosen me after sensing something inside me—like he once had in my dad…

As the realization descended on me, emotion and a certain pride engulfed my being, followed by a reassuring warmth. Knowing I was somehow following in my father’s footsteps gave me purpose to be even better than I was, to try harder. To devote myself to this world as fiercely as he once did.

“To answer your previous statement, Lachlan,” Kingston continued, bringing everyone’s attention back to him. “Yes, there are important things that have changed drastically since you stopped being my commander. Unfortunately, you are no longer in a position to be trusted with them, or any other royal matters.”

To my surprise, no animosity or unkindness colored the chief’s words. Instead, the emotion that tainted them was sadness. I understood then, that Lachlan’s mistake had affected them all far beyond what he had done to their princess. They, too, had lost a friend.

Kingston regarded the entire room next, though his eyes bore into mine. “If the princess agrees, we shall execute Braxton’s plan.” He waited for Evie to nod, and turned on his heel, walking to the door. “Everyone, head to your rooms for an early rest. Our trek will be long, and I expect you ready tomorrow morning at first light.”

The doors slammed closed behind him, their sound reverberating ominously around us.

“Princess Evanna.” Lachlan bowed to her with an entirely different demeanor, seeming shaken by the chief’s words, and left silently—but not before throwing one last vicious glance towards me. His men faithfully followed, looking at me with unashamed curiosity.

The map rearranged itself, its magic sensing we no longer needed it. Evie made her way out of the room with all of us in tow.

“Good night, Princess,” Asher offered when we reached her room, and our voices echoed the sentiment.

“Good night, warriors.” She offered us a small smile, her gaze discreetly stopping on me for a split second before she left us, and I wished I could just go with her.

“Ouch!” The complaint escaped me once we reached our floor, and Asher’s fist slammed against my shoulder.

“Why didn’t you tell me that Fire Fury, of all Dragons, had chosen you?!” he demanded, punching my arm again.

“Well—” A few more punches reached me when Harrison, Fletcher, and Elijah ganged up on me. I pushed them away. “Okay, now you are just enjoying beating me up.”

They grinned at each other because that was exactly what they were doing.

“You better explain right now, or mine will be the punch that hurts the most,” Harper warned.

“I would comply if I were you,” Elijah advised and stepped away—lips twitching when his girl glared at him. She was pissed.

“We welcomed you into our group with open arms, and now we find out you are keeping something like this from us?” she scolded, and my stomach fell. That wasn’t the only thing I was keeping from them.

“I—”

“And don’t you dare say that the chief ordered you not to tell us,” Islay cautioned, as insulted as her friend was. Penelope, Arlo, and Hanna nodded. Apparently, it was the girls' turn to gang up on me.

That left me without a real answer, so I clamped my mouth shut and just stared at them.

“Oh, come on!” Hannah threw her arms in the air while everyone else grunted. “The chief is always taking the fun away from everything.”

At that I had to chuckle. “In his defense, it was an extremely unexpected turn of events. And, in all honesty, I’m still trying tosmooth outa few kinks with our connection. I’ve been training with Tharion each morning since, and still—”

“He doesn’t want to do anything you need help with?” Asher added knowingly.

“Yeah,” I mumbled, sighing in defeat. “How did you know?”

“Uh, your Dragon is Fire Fury. It doesn’t take much to figure it out,” Fletcher replied, as though it should have been obvious.

“Leave it to you to get the most unsociable Dragon there is.” Harper snorted, crossing her arms over her chest, and inadvertently pushing up her breasts in the leather top she wore. Elijah’s attention instantly flew to her chest.

Someone was horny.
