I tried my best not to laugh, but then I realized that was me a few hours ago, before my sudden rendezvous with Evie, and all humor left me. I felt for the guy. Blueballing it wasn’t easy.

“Did you know he used to be your father’s?” Asher asked, giving me all of his attention.

“No, I had no idea until the chief said it in the war room,” I answered honestly, and based on Evie’s reaction, it seemed she hadn’t known either.

“What a legacy,” Finn added with true appreciation, one hand squeezing my shoulder.

“Thanks, Brother.”

“Okay, time for bed,” Asher reminded, breaking up the group. “We’ll meet bright and early.”

Taking Fletcher’s hand, Finn pulled him to his room and my eyes widened, finally realizing why they were so close. I’d just assumed they were best friends. “They are a couple?”

“You hadn’t noticed?” Penelope snickered. “After months of pining for each other, they finally paired last week. Of course, you were too mesmerized by Elijah and Harper’s relationship to see it.”

My lips twitched with her mocking. “But they are so cute.”

“Of course, we are.” Punching my stomach, Elijah smirked at me and walked down the hall, an arm wrapped around Harper’s waist.

Watching the others leave, I entered my room and removed my sword, carefully placing it on the dresser. A moment shared with Evie at the market inundated my mind, yet it wasn’t my body moving against hers that captured my attention, but what happened afterwards.

I still couldn’t believe I had blurtedI love youto her.

Urgent steps took me straight to the window. I needed to talk to Evie in private as soon as possible. Gripping the windowsill, I looked down, and then up to the level above me, measuring the distance between the ledges and decorative corbels on the stone, and Evie’s window.

Damn it. I had officially lost my mind, but also, I finally understood the saying “If a guy wants to see you, there is nothing that will stand in his way.”I wasn’t going to lie, I used to think it was something women said to shame guys, but nope, it turned out they were right. They were right. They were freaking right.

Cursing under my breath, I sat on the window, pushing half my body out, and gripped the top of the frame. I pulled myself up until I could stand on the sill, and my foot reached for the ledge beside me. Carefully, I let my full weight settle on it, relieved it was large enough for me to stand. Of course, that didn’t negate the fact that I was six floors above very rocky ground, climbing the side of a castle.

My fingers curled around one of the corbels above me, and I placed the pad of my boot on the wall, pushing my body up at the same time that I pulled my weight. Vyper wasn’t around, so it was up to me to get there in one piece, and I wasn’t waiting another day. Not after the bomb I had dropped on poor Evie.

Please don’t break. Please don’t break. Pleasedo notbreak.Praying to the structure as though it were a deity, and freaking out about what happened, I swiftly caught onto one of the protruding decorations on the wall with my other hand, and slowly made my way up to her room.

I had told Evie that I loved her…

What the hell had I been thinking?? Clearly, I wasn’t thinking, because the shock on her face told me everything I needed to know. She wasn’t ready for that. I didn’t even know ifIwas ready for it. But my mouth still opened, like it didn’t have a care in the world, and just blurted it out from one moment to the next. What in the actual fuck? It was too soon for me to be in love with her, right? I mean, I didn’t really know if it was too soon or not, but what the hell?

It was fine. Everything was fine. I was totally fine. Evie would be fine too when I told her she could just ignore it.

Sighing, I looked down to see my window was too far for me to turn back, so up I went.

Gripping the bottom ledge of her floor, I pulled myself up onto it, and tried to find my next climbing spot. Finally reaching the window frame, I swung my right leg towards a nearby corbel and stood on it, struggling to balance in the awkward position I was. I had no idea how frogs did it. Thankfully, I could see into the space.

Evie walked towards the bed in her nightgown, but she was not alone. Willow was with her.

Seriously? Help a brother out! I hadn’t climbed all the way up here, just to have to go back down to my room.

Carefully, I peeked inside her chambers again, seeing Willow fluff the skirt Evie had worn, placing it on a hook on the wall.

“What the hell happened to your dress?!” Willow suddenly shrieked, whirling in my direction while holding Evie’s top. “The silk is all scratched!”

I dropped from her view immediately, hiding under the windowsill.

“Oh, that. I was talking to Kingston in the hallway and I rested against the wall. I’m so sorry. I guess I kept moving while we chatted and I didn’t realize it was damaging the dress.”

The back of her dress got damaged? How? The halls inside the castle weren’t—Oh. Realization interrupted my thoughts, causing a smirk that captured my lips. I had pressed her against the rough, fissure’s wall during our quicky. Oops.

“It’s okay. I’m sure I can figure out a way to replace the back panel.” Willow sounded sad, and my amusement faded. I felt bad about ruining the dress she had made, though it had definitely been an accident.
