Screams rang in the air all when our people began to scramble out of the way, fearing for their lives. Evie and Kingston were on the move, guiding them towards the rim where their rides were, carrying children and aiding the elderly. The Elevated Warriors instantly formed a wall of protection before the people, aiming spears towards what they deemed the monster, and calling his attention to them. They were ready to take his life or give theirs if necessary.

Luna, Athina, Spartan, Fulgur, and Alkor extended their wings while the princess and the chief frantically loaded people onto them. Ember and Saithar turned towards the newcomer, growling at him and beating their wings against the ground in a sign of aggression. They looked eager to lunge at him to protect us. Spooked, the horses ran toward the river, getting the hell out of the way.

Amidst the pandemonium, Lachlan and his two men began climbing the spine of the yellow Dragon with spears in hand—probably to strike through the back of his neck—but he hadn’t noticed yet.

Chaos reigned all around us, and Tharion… well, he was sleeping in the river.

Bursts of rage intensified within my being as I stared at the yellow Dragon, but also did a sense of urgency. They were going to kill him.

“Hey!” I shouted within the commotion, and for a moment, I thought he wouldn’t hear me, but his head snapped straight in my direction. An electrifying current zapped through me when his nearly white eyes bore into mine, making a violent shudder rush down my spine. His back shuddered too.

Lachlan and his men tumbled with the movement, but caught onto the fin style things that ran the length of the creatures neck, alerting him to their presence on him. The yellow Dragon bucked and shook his head, trying to get them off him, and a screech erupted from his throat. Not just a screech, a lightning bolt shot straight to the other side of the river, striking the trees and setting fire to the forest.

Desperate screams of terror erupted everywhere.

The force of his lurching sent Lachlan and the others hurling off the creature’s neck. They crashed through the massive tree branches, luckily able to grasp onto them to stop their deadly tumble to the ground.

Heart pounding, I glanced up. “Hey!” I shouted again, frantically moving my arms to bring the creature’s attention back to me.

Another bout of electricity as powerful as lightning itself ran through me, and it was then I knew. It was him. It was him who I connected to when I was in Raithian’s mind trap. He had given me the strength I needed.

He saved me.

My body became frigid as I realized something else. It was his rage I had felt moments ago. But it wasn’t his alone. My turmoil for what occurred in the mission, killing for the first time, my rivalry with Lachlan, and frustration for failing my friends had spurred his ire. He’d been infused by my conflicting emotions. The yellow Dragon wasn’t here to kill us. He was responding to the link that formed between us, and trying to protect me.

“I’m here!” I called, waving my arms again. “Come to me.”

“Braxton, stop this!” Kingston ordered, already on Spartan’s neck. “He isn’t one of our Dragons. He’s wild, savage. Hewillkill you!”

“Listen to us, Brax,” Evie urged me. “He’s not like the ones you first saw when you arrived here. He’s had no interaction with people. He will attack.”

No, he wouldn’t. I knew it in my heart.

“He won’t hurt me,” I shouted back. “He’s just restless because he can feel the tempest inside me.”

Pain glimmered in Evie’s features with my confession. “Don’t do this. No one has ever tamed a Dragon. It's too dangerous.”

“I have to calm him. I can do it. Trust me.” Pulling my gaze away from her, I noticed that the yellow Dragon was moving towards me slowly, observing me. Motioning to him to keep him engaged, I began to walk back towards where Tharion slept. “Take everyone out of here!” I yelled to Kingston and the guard without looking at them. I couldn’t take my attention away from the wild creature.

“Go!” Evie ordered without hesitation.

Our Dragons began to lift off as soon as our people were safely on them. A couple gently grabbed the horses in their hands and feet, taking them as they flew away. However, I could still sense Evie, the chief, and a few of the Elevated Warriors around me. They were not lowering their guard.

Forgetting about everything else, I focused on calming my breathing, and letting go of every troubling emotion raging through me, while guiding the yellow Dragon away from them. The crackling electricity between us began to still as he followed, his eyes locked with mine.

“They mean no harm… they are my family,” I assured, hoping that talking to him would help. His head tilted, trying to process my words and he took two more steps. With every movement, I couldn’t help but admire how different he was from all the others.

He wasn’t really yellow, but some kind of mix between a chartreuse green and bright lemon, reminding me of little Suzie’s drawings. She always used a different color to paint the silhouette of her dinosaurs, and the Dragon before me looked just like that. Like she had painted him a light, but almost neon green, then colored his entire silhouette in a bright yellow. Even the rows of fins along his head, spine, and chest stood out vibrantly.

His eyes were an icy blue so light that they seemed practically white, and his mouth was really wide along his cheeks, like that of a snake. He hissed, still restless, and long, thin, double tongues flickered out towards me. I also noticed he had no arms, only legs and the appendages that conformed his wings with sharp talons. When he hissed again, I almost expected him to spew venom at me. He reminded me of a blond snake.

Asher, Harrison, and Harper’s spears rose as they walked behind him, ready to strike if things went awry, but I shook my head at them.

“It’s okay. Shh. It’s okay.” I spoke to both them and the creature, halting when the edge of the river broke my path.

Tharion finally decided to join the party, shaking his body sort of like a dog, and sending drops of water splashing everywhere. The yellow Dragon hissed at him, rearing back, but Tharion looked undaunted by his presence. Holding his gaze for a moment, he regarded me too, and then perked up, as though he realized what was happening. Turning to Evie and the others, he roared at them, but it wasn’t an aggressive sound, more of a ‘I got this. Move aside’.
