Star’s head snapped towards the cave’s opening instantly, and she inhaled deeply, only then scenting Evie. She jumped to her feet, taking a few steps to rush to her soulmate, but stopped herself the next second.

“Go to her!”I urged.“She misses you, needs you.”

Star shook her head, as stubborn as her soulmate.“I hurt her,”she confessed. “I left her side when she needed me the most.”

Walking to her, I forced her eyes to lower.“She was a child. One destroyed by what happened, and with no idea how to handle it. She didn’t mean anything she said.”

“I know…”

“Then why did you leave her?”I hated that my question sounded accusatory, I didn’t mean it that way, I just really wanted to know.

“Because I, too, was hurting.”She lowered her head, the wisps ofher pain spreading through me.“A part of me agreed with her. Maybe, if I had been there, I could have helped save her parents… I didn’t want her to be reminded of what she lost every time she looked at me.”

“I’m sure she will forgive you, if you are willing to forgive her.”

Star’s attention returned to me, a loving air capturing her expression. “There is nothing to forgive.”

“Then, go to her,” I urged again.“She came all the way here for you.”

My new friend hurried towards the front, forcing me to spring after her, only to stop in her tracks once Evie came into view. Her chest rose and fell rapidly with her breathing, mirroring Evie’s once she realized her Dragon had come to her.

“Star…” she breathed, taken aback by the sight of her magnificent soulmate after so many years.

Before I could ask if she was okay with Evie entering her lair, Evie ran inside it.

Her arms opened wide just as Star lowered her head to receive her. The scene merged with the memories Luna’s daughter had shared, and I saw little Evie crash against Star’s forehead through time, until the woman she now was wrapped her arms around her soulmate in a fierce hug, like she’d done a thousand times before tragedy got in their way.

Any past hurt they harbored was instantly healed as Star and Evie finally reunited.

Watching them together, my eyes stung, because I was a sucker for this kind of shit.

“I love you, Star. I’m so sorry,” Evie whispered, briefly looking up into her eyes.

“I love you too. And I’m the one who is sorry.”

When Star nuzzled Evie’s stomach and lowered her head again for her to hug her, I knew the sentiment needed no translation.

Something bumped against my leg, and my golden-hued gaze lowered to find Aeramen there. He whined at me to carry him, using his claws to try to climb my leg. Cringing, I picked him up and settled him against my hip like I used to do with little Suzie, walking out of the lair not to disrupt the beautiful moment.

“I missed you too,” I whispered, leaving Evie with her Dragon to tend to mine.

“Everyone is sad,”Aeramen sent through our connection, nestling his head on my shoulder.“It hurts.”

“I know, buddy. I’m so sorry.”The ache coming from him made my chest tighten, and I scratched the spot behind his horns.“Do you want me to take you to Imogen, so you can be with the other Dragon babies?”

With his nod, I headed for the stairs again, knowing Evie would be well taken care of by Star.

“Get on my back, then,”I instructed when we reached the edge. “No claws,” I warned out loud and he whined again, climbing to my back.
