“Don’t even think about it!” I shouted to her, seeing her lower her head, wings closing on her back submissively.

Holy shit! I didn’t even know how I’d done that, but this was not the time to question it.

Devenish magic…something whispered inside of me.

Stunned, Lachlan’s eyes returned to me, and he finally stood down, stepping out of my blade’s way. Muscles still jumped along his arms with rage though, he was definitelynothappy about that.

“A lot has changed since you left the guard, Lachlan.” A woman’s voice declared from the back entrance to the castle, and we all turned to find Willow walking towards us. “You made the biggest mistake of your life when you disrespected Princess Evanna in front of her people, and no matter how hard you try, you cannot undo that. You cannot reclaim your place in her heart. And for that, you have only yourself to blame.”

Her statement stung because it reminded me that he had meant something to Evie. If I’d never met her, maybe she’d be with him now. But Ihadmet her. Iwashere, and she was mine.

“She may have forgiven you, but you won’t find your way back to how things were,” Willow continued, stopping a few feet from us as her pained eyes glanced at me. “Sometimes, it doesn’t matter how badly you wish it so, how hard you try to hold on, or how much you are willing to fight. You cannot get back what you lost…” Her attention returned to him. “Trust me, I know.”

Lachlan’s hands fisted at his sides, arms and chest contracting in a way that said her words resonated with him, but he refused to accept it.

“The place you once left empty has been filled. Not only for Evanna but for all of us,” Willow admitted. “She has chosen a better man than you, and he is here to stay, Lachlan. It is time you let go.”

Fuck. I had no words.

When my gaze returned to him, I found him picking up his weapon from the packed dirt, and with a final stare at all of us, he left.

Sheathing my spear again, I focused on my friend. “Willow, I—”

“Shut up,” she barked at me. “I did not do it for you. I am tired of men thinking they can treat us however they want, and we will still receive them with our arms open. It is time for Lachlan to realize that his actions have consequences he cannot undo.”

True, but she had still done it for me… a little.

“So, you and I are good now?” I asked, a bit too hopeful.

She threw me a side glance, lifting her chin defiantly. “Fine. Now go brew me a coffee. You made me addicted to those things, and it’s been a few days since I’ve—”

I pulled her into my embrace with a grin, hugging her fiercely. Willow’s arms wrapped around me too, squeezing the life out of me like she needed the hug. Her cheek rested on my chest.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered to her, feeling her shake her head before glancing up at me.

“I release you from your oath, Braxton. You don’t have to do it. Evanna loves you, and she couldn’t bear it if something…” Her head shook once more. “I don’t want you to die.”

My heart constricted with her pain, her fear. “I’m not going to die, Willow. I swear to you. I have too much to live for now.” Kissing her cheek, I hugged her again, remaining like that for as long as she needed.

“Can I get my coffee now?” she suddenly mumbled against my chest. “I was not kidding.”

Laughing, I stepped back and took her hand, pulling her with me. “It will be my pleasure.”

The others chuckled, following us inside the castle.
