Everyone’s head whipped towards the voice, to find Lachlan marching towards me, his spear pointed straight at my head.

Fuck me. I really did not have patience for this guy right now.

“Lachlan, stop,” Evie began but he turned to the guard.

“Aren’t you going to do anything? He kissed her!” he yelled, enraged. “Don’t you care about protecting her anymore?! What about her honor?”

Seriously?

“Dude, are you really that stupid?” I challenged, squaring myself to him. “Do you see Evanna fighting me? Do you think Kingston would let me live if I had kissed her without her consent, or his for that matter?”

Confusion splintered the rage in his eyes, and he turned to regard the others before his attention landed on the chief. “You cannot possibly allow this!”

“Excuse me, but I am a grown woman. The soon-to-be queen, for that matter, and I am in charge of my own life,” Evie answered, a dangerous warning engulfing her voice. “I do not requireyourpermission, Kingston’s, or anyone else’s!”

Her answer took him aback, until his gaze returned to me, becoming lethal.

“You cannot trust him!” Lachlan glared at her, seeking reason within her. “He is lying to you, to all of you. Penelope died because of him!”

“Shut your fucking mouth!” I warned, moving past Evie to confront him. Fire awoke inside me, mixed with renewed pain, and every single one of my muscles locked into place as I started him down.

“I speak the truth,” He sneered at me. “We were safe here until you arrived.” His eyes flew to the others. “Do you really think Raithian coming here, to our Hidden Kingdom, was a coincidence? He came here forhim!” His spear pointed at me, stopping way too close to my chest for my licking. “He is working with the Warlock King to destroy us!” the asshole raged.

“Enough!” Kingston roared, standing to his massive height, infuriated in a way I had never seen him. The sight was frightening, so much so that the Elevated Warriors seemed floored by it.

“How else do you explain him leaving with the Raithian and returning unscathed?” Lachlan challenged, doubling down even though he, too, flinched with the chief’s response. His hatred for me seemed bigger than his sense of self preservation. “He should be dead right now. You all know that. No one has confronted Raithian and lived to talk about it.”

To my dismay, everything around me went eerily silent. Part of me hoped it was because they couldn’t explain without telling him who I truly was, but it still stung to see them lower their heads and look away, unsure.

Imogen shook her head at me slowly, in a way that said ‘don’t give away anything.’

Unfortunately, Lachlan took that as a sign of him gaining ground.

“You and Raithian are connected somehow,” he assured. “There is a reason he hasn’t killed you and I do not care if everyone else is too caught up between your elaborate lies to see it. I’m going to stop you!”

He lunged forwards, trying to tackle me to the ground, but his forearm crashed against a wall of muscle, without nudging me a single step. His eyes widened in shock and confusion as he staggered back from the force.

Taking advantage of it, I knocked the weapon out of his hand with my left arm, and whirled on him, the blade of my retractable spear stopping with precision barely an inch from his neck.

Asher grinned proudly behind him—I’d unsheathed, extended, and poised my weapon against my enemy’s neck in a single move. The first attack my commander had ever taught me.

“Stand. Down,” I ordered in a low thunder, echoed by the growl of the eight Dragons that surrounded us.

Tharion, Venom, Star, Athina, Spartan, Spike, Alkor, and Fulgur slowly rose, their menacing eyes locked on him as they bared sharp teeth and claws. Lachlan’s head slightly lifted, eyes bouncing between them all while the gravity of the situation settled on him—even when he had no idea what was happening.

Tharion took a step forwards, red glowing eyes homed in on my rival while the fire lava illuminated its way up to his throat under each scale.

It was a bit of over kill, but okay.

“I am not the same man you dueled, Lachlan. So, I will give you one last chance. Whatever crap you have with me, ends now.”

The muscles of his jaw tensed with rage when his attention returned to me, his sneer saying it wasn’t over yet. Not by a fucking long shot.

Damn it.

His Dragon must have felt his extreme emotions, because Saithar landed on the other end of the training area the next moment. She screeched at me, wings fluttering behind her to show how distraught she was. Her mouth opened wide…

Before she could go too far, my essence ignited, sending a shock of golden lightning through the family tree, straight to Saithar’s branch. The warning shock immediately reached her, and she reeled back, stunned by what she had felt.
