After visibly warring with himself for a time, he eventually nodded. “Lie back. No, I won’t try again, not like before.”
Her brow wrinkled with confusion, but she reclined once more, trusting him. William lifted his nightshirt, freeing his stiff shaft and taking it in hand. He rubbed its tip along her seam a few times, moaning deeply, then aligned himself with her and began pumping. Rather than penetrate her, he moved shallowly along her.
Oh.
The act didn’t pain her. While it elicited little reaction from her, it also required no effort on her part—all while bringing him evident pleasure. She watched his facial expressions as he moved over her, marveling at how different this all seemed without the veil of her own arousal. If she didn’t bear so much affection and gratitude toward this man, she might think him downright silly looking.
But she did feel immensely affectionate and grateful toward him, and was happy to offer this to him. She couldn’t imagine it was a full experience, but she hoped it was enough for now. Judging by the way he cried out as he spurted hotly onto her belly, it was more than adequate.
“Thank you, Beatrice,” he panted afterwards.
“My pleasure, my lord.”
He closed his eyes. “I’m afraid it wasn’t.”
Sitting up again, she captured his hand. “Thank you for coming to my chamber, William. I know it isn’t like before, but I hope it will be again. In the meantime, please return to me. Even for…that. I would like that. Ilikebeing your wife.”
After searching her face, his expression softened. “As you see fit, my lady.”
In the back of her mind, Bea knew she ought to be more horrified at how the visit had gone, but fatigue had so sapped her strength, she was nearly asleep by the time he left her chamber. The nursemaid would bring Miriam any time within the next few hours for her next feeding.
She supposed she ought to rise and cleanse herself, but she merely curled onto her side and drifted off, feeling warm.
