I didn’t expect that and I’m wary. How can I tell him anything without revealing who I really am?

“There’s nothing to tell,” I reply dismissively. “I’m really rather boring.”

“You’re many things. Boring is not one of them.” His fingers trail over my skin, making me feel hot between my legs. A few inches north and he would be touching me. I need it. Want it.

“You barely know me.”

“That can change. Do you have brothers? Sisters?”

“Neither. What about you?”

“I have two brothers and a sister.” He takes a sip of his drink.

“Are you close?” I’m unable to keep the curiosity out of my voice.

“Yes. I don’t think my parents ever intended to make us as close as we are.”

“Why do you say that?”

He leans into me, and I get a noseful of his masculine scent. “Because we’re a united force against them.” His smile is dark, but I find my own lips curving up at the corners.

“Are you the eldest?”

“The second youngest, actually. My sister is the baby of the family.”

I always wanted a brother, someone who would stand between me and Declan. I never had that buffer.

“You protect her?”

“With my life.” The response is not empty. I can tell by the fierceness in his eyes. “My sister and my brothers are everything to me. I would die to defend any one of them.”

Jealousy rears its ugly head. No one has ever done that for me.

As we talk, I feel myself growing closer to him, wanting to know everything about him. It’s a foolish want, but in the moment I allow myself to hope.

And that is dangerous.

Hope makes a person want things that can’t be theirs, and it pushes them into impossible situations. Luke and I can never be more than what we are now, and that hurts. The first time in my life that I feel like I’ve found someone I could share my time with, someone I feel comfortable with, and I can’t have him.

“What do you do for a living?” I ask.

He seems to find this amusing, because his lips quirk into a smirk. “A little of this and a little of that. My family owns a few businesses around the city.”

I cock my brow, impressed by this. “You’re a businessman?”

“I’m a man who gets what he wants,” Luke says in a voice that makes my stomach quiver. He has a way of making me feel like the most important thing in the room.

“And what is it you want?”

He leans into me, his nose skimming up the column of my throat. “You, little dove.” Butterflies take flight inside my belly. “What do you say we get out of here?”

“And go where?” I ask, holding my breath. I would like a repeat performance of the last time we were together, but I’m not sure if that’s what he wants.

“A hotel.” He kisses along the line of my jaw, and I feel my body turn to jelly with each press of his lips. I want to go with him, desperately. I’m not thinking rationally. I’m just acting on what I want. “Okay.”

He tips his glass and drains it of scotch before grabbing my hand and pulling out of the booth. As we step out of it, I notice a man waiting at the side. It’s the same man who had driven us to the hotel. “Who’s the man who follows you?”

I’ve seen enough bodyguards to know this man is Luke’s. Why would Luke need a bodyguard?
