I can imagine the anger on his face as he takes my words in. It feels liberating as hell to finally be able to stand up to him. I used to fear him, but now I just feel sorry for Declan. He is a sad, lonely, old man, and he will remain that way. He could have made different choices, and we could have been a real family. Blood doesn’t define parentage, but he made it a huge deal. Now, he has no one. Not even his syndicate. In a bid to protect some of his holdings, he struck a deal with the Frasers. It made him a servant in his own kingdom, one who answers to Charlotte and Anthony. It’s a bittersweet outcome, and I can’t say I’m sorry that he has fallen so far. Declan deserves everything he’s got.

Worse, in fact.

I thought the Frasers let him off fairly easily. The only reason they didn’t dismantle his organisation completely was because he never actually took a stand against the family. Had he done that, things would have been very different.

“Give me time and I’ll have an answer for you.”

“I’ll give you a month. After that, I’m telling everyone.” I end the call and slide my phone back onto the bedside table.

Luke instantly wraps his arms around me, pulling me against him. “He’ll give you the answers you want. He won’t want the secret of your parentage to come out. Declan Easton is a proud prick.”

Luke is right. Declan will not want it to come out and embarrass him.

“Anyway, I don’t want to talk about Declan fucking Easton. I want to make my wife come.”

That’s precisely what he does. He fucks me hard until I explode with desire.

Eventually we have to get out of bed and get ready. We shower together and then I pull on my dress while Luke puts on a suit. I’m just brushing out my hair when he comes to stand behind me, his hands going to my shoulders. “I’m not expecting trouble,” he says, “but I want you to stick as close to me as you can during the ceremony.”

I turn to look at him, searching his face and seeing nothing apparent in his expression. Even so, I feel a hint of anxiety ripple through me. “The fact that you’re saying that suggests you are worried. Do you think her family are going to renege on the deal?”

Luke shifts his shoulders. “When it comes to mob weddings, nothing is ever straightforward. The Adams syndicate wants this marriage to go ahead, just as we do. But these things have a mind of their own.” He kisses the top of my head. “I would rather you stay behind, in safety, but it will look weak if you do. We must present a united front.”

I place my hand over his on my shoulder and give it a gentle squeeze. “It’ll be okay. Everything will go off without a hitch, you’ll see.”

“I hope you’re right,” he says. “You look beautiful, little dove.”

I give him a sultry look. “You scrub up pretty nicely yourself, Luke.”

He raises my hand to his mouth and kisses the back of my knuckles. “Let’s go and watch my brother get married.”

And hope to fuck it won’t be a red wedding.
