Trust is not something that comes easily to me, especially after Aaron Leep, one of my father’s lieutenants, stabbed my family in the back. We trusted him, yet he took my sister and Sariah and handed them over to our enemies. I killed that fucker slowly. Painfully. Without remorse. I could have done worse but there’s always that fine line between life and death. In the end, his body hadn’t been strong enough to withstand what I was doing to him, and he died before I got to my big finale. Annoying.

For that reason, I find it hard to trust even our inner circle these days.

Weston is different.

He’s practically blood, which is why I handed Elena’s safety to him.

I would trust that man with my life.

“We have men stationed around the venue. In the hall too. Hamish has brought his own forces with him too. We’re well prepared for anything.” He seems weirdly calm, but it helps to ease some of the tension in my shoulders. I don’t mind spilling blood, in fact I relish it, but I would prefer my wedding day to not be the scene of a massacre.

“Make sure we are. I want today to go without a hitch.”

“And it will. Just focus on saying all the right words to the registrar. That’s all you have to do.”

There’s a knock before the door opens. Zeke steps inside. My brother looks a little pale, but other than that he seems okay as I scan my gaze over him and his matching suit. It pisses me off that Charlotte is giving him shit.

“You feeling okay?” I ask instantly.

“Shouldn’t I be asking you that?” Zeke says.

“Well? Are you?” I press at his non-answer.

Zeke waves off my concern. “I’m fine. Despite what Charlotte thinks, I can hold it together for the duration of one day without putting the family to shame.”

“Was Sariah okay?” Lucas asks, earning an eye roll from Zeke.

“She can survive for two seconds out of your eyeline, Luke.”

“I’m worried about her. She’s been quiet since they were attacked.”

“It’s not surprising she would be upset,” Zeke says. “Someone shot at her. At all of them. It’s bound to leave a few nightmares behind.”

“Has Bailey been okay?”

“Bailey grew up in an MC. She’s seen worse.”

Lucas huffs out a breath, and I can see how fazed our little brother is by all of this. It makes me want to slowly and methodically slice up the people who attacked the women even more. “I’d feel better if I knew who was behind it. I hate being in the fucking dark.”

“So would we all,” I tell him, “but these things take time.”

“They shouldn’t,” Lucas mutters. “What’s the point of having all this power if you can’t use it to gain fucking answers?”

“Be patient,” Zeke schools him. “We’ll figure shit out soon enough. Now, let’s get our brother married.”

I follow my brothers out of the suite and into the front of the ceremony hall. There are hundreds of guests already seated. I recognise the main players. Those with ties into our world, but there are plenty of others I don’t recognise or know. Family members of Elena, perhaps. Friends to our families. I ignore them and focus on the front of the aisle, where the registrar is waiting. He doesn’t look thrilled about being here, but he slaps on a smile as I get closer. I don’t need him to care. I just need him to do the ceremony.

Charlotte pushes up from where she’s sitting in the front row of seats, my father next to her, and comes to me. The hat on her head is overly big, obnoxiously so in fact, and her dress is formal. She took her role as mother of the groom seriously.

“Oh, Kane. You look wonderful.” She reaches out to fiddle with my cravat, but I brush her off. I don’t need her fussing over me.

“Is she here?” I ask.

“Of course she’s here.” Charlotte clucks her tongue. “Why wouldn’t she be?”

“Why do you think?” This is a marriage neither of us chose. It wouldn’t surprise me if she decided not to go through with it.

Charlotte grabs my biceps and leans into me. “She won’t back out, son. It would be war if she did.”
