It’s been a while since I felt the niggling sensation in my gut.

Nerves.

The last time it happened, Zeke was shot.

I push up from my seat and the music stops and the main lights come on, illuminating the room completely. Elena’s gaze finds mine, and she watches as I make my way to her. Her hair is no longer pristinely curled but a little wild. I like this look more.

“You had fun,” I say.

It’s not a question. I can tell she did. There’s a light sheen of sweat covering her skin from her exertion.

“Yes. I’m sorry I was dancing all night.”

I shake my head. “Don’t apologise. If you’re finished, I suggest we head up to our room.”

Charlotte booked the bridal suite for us for tonight, and then tomorrow we’ll head to our home. The home my wife does not like. I have a stack of property brochures she can flick through when things get a little more settled.

The smile doesn’t entirely disappear from her face but it’s not as vibrant as it was.

“Okay,” she says. “We should say goodnight to everyone before we, um… go up.”

“I’ll wait for you,” I tell her.

She moves around her friends and family, hugging them. She’s so vibrant, glowing in a way I’ve not seen. She had a good night.

“Someone had fun,” Lucas says as he comes up to me, Sariah tucked against his side. She is wearing his suit jacket and looks tired.

“So it seems.” Sariah takes my hand in hers. It takes me by surprise, and I have to stop from jolting away from her.

“She’ll be scared. I was terrified the day of my wedding. I had no idea what to expect. I was petrified of what Jeremiah was going to do to me. Elena doesn’t know you. Doesn’t know what kind of man you are, Kane, other than the reputation you have built. I was lucky your family took me, and I married the man I love. Elena has to know you first before she can fall for you. Treat her kindly, and she’ll come around.”

I take her sage words in before I duck my head and press a kiss to my sister-in-law’s cheek. “Thank you.”

“Where’s Zeke?” I ask.

“Went home. I don’t think our brother is back to full health yet.”

He had seemed pale throughout the day. Thinking of my brother’s injuries makes me want to murder someone. I push down my anger.

“Aurelia?”

“Charlotte and Anthony will make sure she gets home, but I have Weston keeping an eye on her.”

That eases some of the tension in my chest. Today went off without a hitch, but that doesn’t mean our enemies are not waiting for us to leave. I want my sister safe.

Elena makes her way over to us, done with her goodbyes. “Are you leaving?” she asks Lucas and Sariah.

“Yeah. You looked amazing today, Elena. My brother needs to realise how lucky he is.”

I do.

I say nothing though. Instead, I’m completely focused on the way Elena flushes with pleasure at his compliment.

“Thank you. It was wonderful to meet you all.”

“We’ll have lunch soon,” Sariah promises.

“Sounds perfect,” Elena says. She turns to me. “Shall we go up?”
