“You’ve already proved that.”

He pushes up from where he’s leaning against the desk and gives me a look before stepping back into the room.

Alone for the first time since we came upstairs, I take a second to collect myself and catch my breath before I step back into the room. My eyes automatically seek out Aurelia. She’s sitting with Sariah and Elena, talking softly, but her gaze finds mine.

Fuck, I want to drag her out of this room and hold her all night long.

Luke steps over to me before I can move. “We’ve got a registrar coming in over an hour. Kane managed to pull some strings to get the wedding notice backdated. All the documents need to be signed and notarized, but it should be simple enough.” Luke glances over his shoulder at Aurelia. “You sure you want to do this?”

“Positive.”

He blows out a breath. “Okay then. Gem’s also here. She’s waiting in the bedroom to check you over.”

Gem is their cousin, Gemma Fraser. She despises the brothers and resents being pushed into their business. They should leave her alone, let her get on with her life, but they won’t because having a doctor on speed dial is handy.

“I don’t need to see her. I feel okay,” I say.

“It’ll make Aurelia feel better.” He smirks, knowing I won’t argue with that.

“Fine. Where is she?”

“Waiting in the guest bedroom at the end of the hall.”

I head down the hallway where the bedrooms are and step into the room Luke indicated. Gemma is waiting for me, her kit laid out on the bed. She eyes me with irritation.

“Let’s get this over with,” she mutters.

“Your bedside manner always this good?” I ask.

She rolls her eyes. “I’m only here because I have to be, and I’m nice to real patients who actually need my help.”

I sit on the edge of the bed, and she goes through what happened with me. I don’t tell her Charlotte tried to abduct Aurelia. I keep the details vague. She doesn’t think anything is broken from the punches I took. She checks my eyes and my cognitive state next.

When she’s done asking me questions, she sits back. “I don’t think you’re concussed, but someone should stay with you tonight. Any dizziness, go straight to the hospital.”

“Thanks.”

She packs up her kit. “Don’t fucking mention it.”

I grab her wrist. “You want out of this life, Gemma, then get out of it. Go far away from London, from the Fraser name. Start again. They won’t follow you,” I tell her.

Fear flashes in her eyes. “I don’t… I don’t want to leave.” The lie doesn’t fall easily from her mouth.

“Live your life, Gemma.”

She swallows hard, forcing a smile before she grabs her kit. “Remember what I said. Any dizziness—”

“Yeah, yeah. I’ll go to the hospital.”

She leaves the room. I pull my tee back on and slowly stand. My ribs hurt but it could have been so much worse than it was.

When I return to the room, Aurelia stands, coming to me. “Are you okay?”

I nod. “Luke said the registrar will be here within the hour. Are you sure you want to do this?”

She smiles, and there’s so much warmth in that look. “Absolutely.”
