CHAPTER20

Ryan

The registrar is a portly man in his fifties. He looks like he dragged his arse out of bed to be here, but knowing Kane, his bank account is fatter today than it was yesterday. I’ve found there’s very little that can’t be sorted by playing to the greedy nature of men.

He moves to the kitchen counter and opens his briefcase. “This is highly unorthodox,” he says.

“You’re being paid to do the ceremony. Not ask fucking questions,” Kane tells him. The man shrinks back a little and grabs the paperwork.

“This shouldn’t take long. Who is the couple?”

Aurelia and I step forward. She’s dressed in borrowed clothes, but she’s never looked more beautiful to me than she does in this moment.

“I just need you to sign the documents—”

I cut him off. “No.”

“No?”

“You’re going to give us the same ceremony you do for all weddings.”

“But…”

“Do it,” Kane snaps.

We stand in front of the man, facing each other. I grip her hands, wishing we could do this properly. Maybe when all this shit is over, we can have an actual ceremony.

I ignore him, focusing on the woman standing in front of me, the woman I’m about to make my wife.

“There’s still time to change your mind,” I tell her, giving her an out if she wants to take it.

She rolls to her toes and presses her mouth to mine. “I can’t wait to be Mrs Aurelia Malone.”

Hearing her say that makes me want to be inside her, claiming her. Aurelia smiles up at me like she can’t get enough of me. I like that. I want that look to always be in her eyes when she peers at me.

I want to be a good husband. I want to show her how much I cherish her.

This might have started out as a wedding to protect her, but it’s become so much more than that to me. I want her to be my wife. I want to take care of her. I want to cherish her.

My heart races as the registrar gives us both words to say. I barely remember a single one, but at the end, he tells us we can kiss. I smile at her before I descend. Aurelia wraps her arms around my neck and pulls us closer. She feels so good against me.

Luke clears his throat, making us break away a little.

“Hello, husband,” Aurelia grins.

“I like the sound of that.”

“So do I.”

“We don’t have rings,” I tell her.

“It doesn’t matter,” she says.

It doesn’t, but as soon as I can, I’ll put a ring on her finger worthy of her.

“You need to sign the paperwork,” the registrar says.

Holding her hand, we go to the breakfast bar and sign what he asks us to. Kane and Luke sign as witnesses.
