She turns toward me, putting her hands on my chest. “No. I’ll leave with her. But I’ll convince her that you’re a good guy. I promise I will.”

“I don’t know if you’ll ever convince her of that, not after what happened. She’s not wrong—I am a bad guy.”

“Don’t say that. Just trust me, Greyson. Please.”

I want to trust her—it’s them I don’t trust. I don’t want to watch her walk out of here with the fear that I’ll never see her again. That thought terrifies me. I only just got her back after nine years; I can’t lose her again.

My choices are to take Lya and Thiago out, and get Lainey far away from here, or let her leave and just trust that she has a plan. I know that if I take her away from her sister, she may hate me for that, so I guess I have to have confidence in her.

As Lya and Thiago make their way back over, Lainey steps forward. “I’ll go with you, but I just want you to know I won’t give up on being with Greyson.”

A victorious smile comes across Lya’s face as she grabs Lainey’s arm and pulls her away down the aisle. Lainey looks back at me with sad eyes.

I can’t let her go. I know I just decided to trust her, but I can’t let her out of my sight.

“No. You’re not leaving with her.” I rush forward to stop them, but Thiago steps in my way, pushing me back. I’m a big man, but Thiago has more muscle than I do. If I want to get past him, I’ll have to be smart about it.

“Don’t even think about it,” he sing-songs.

Lya picks up the pace with my girl in tow, and before I know it, they’re out of sight. My heart feels like it’s being ripped in half, not knowing if this is the last time I’ll ever see her.

“So, you’re just going to keep her locked up? Keep her in a cage like she has been for years?” I demand.

Thiago gets right in my face. “If you ever want a chance to see her again, I suggest you calm the fuck down and come with me.”

“Why the fuck would I do that?”

“Just. Come. With. Me.” There's a look of uneasiness in his dark eyes. Kind of like he’s unsure about what he’s doing. I wonder what’s going on.

“Where?”

“Your car.”

I clench my jaw. “And after that?”

Thiago rolls his eyes in annoyance. “The guys want to talk to you.”

“Do you think I’m an idiot?” I scoff. Their version of talking probably involves very little talking and a lot of beating.

“No, but I think you want to see Lainey again. That won’t ever happen if you don’t come with me.” He sounds sincere, like he’s telling the truth... but I can’t trust these guys. They left me for dead once, there’s no telling what they’ll do this time.

“How the hell can I trust you? How do I know that you’ll even let me see her again if I go with you? This could be a trap.” My eyes narrow at him in suspicion.

“You’re right, it could be. You’re going to have to take that risk,” he tells me seriously. After I don’t say anything for a moment, he lets out a sigh. “Look man, I’ll be honest. I don’t like you. I probably will never like you. That’s just how things are. But today, seeing the way Lainey looked at you—that’s something I can relate to. That girl, she’s been through hell and back. It’s been hard for her to open up to anyone and she’s just looked like a ghost for the last six months.

“But lately, she’s been livelier. Happier. I just assumed she was getting better and more used to us, but clearly you’ve been playing a big part in it. I don’t want to hurt you, but I can’t just let you go.” He looks conflicted.

“Okay, say I believe you. You’ve told meyouwon’t hurt me, but can you say for sure the other two assholes won’t?” Those two would have killed me in that abandoned house if it weren’t for Lya deciding against it.

“I can’t speak for them. All I can tell you is that if you want any chance of seeing Lainey again, I’m your best bet. Coming with me voluntarily is the best thing for you in this situation right now.”

I already know I’m going to regret this decision, but the sooner I go, the sooner I might get Lainey back. I also don’t want to have to fight this man in the middle of a public library where Ms. Mabel could see that ruthless, violent side of me.

I growl at him, letting him know I’m not afraid to let my inner demons out on him or anyone else. “Fuck. I’ll go, but if anything happens to Lainey, all hell will break loose and I’ll have all of your heads.” Pulling my keys out of my pocket, I hold them out in front of me.

Thiago snatches them from my hand with a snarl. “Come on,” he says, heading toward the front of the library.

I don’t want to follow, but I’ll do anything for this woman, even if it means confronting Thiago, Zep and Rian. I follow him out and climb into the passenger seat of my own fucking car. What a fucking asshole. This is bullshit.
