She puts her hands on my chest. “If something happens—”

I quickly cut her off. “It won’t.”

“If it does,” she continues, “I want you to promise me something.”

What the fuck is she thinking?Nothing’s going to happen. We have a bulletproof plan. We’re killing Sutton and his goons today, but she’s acting like this is the end. Like we aren’t going to come out of this alive.

She must be able to see my mind turning, because she quickly grabs onto my hand that's resting on her cheek. “Greyson, will you make me a promise?” Her soft voice pulls my attention back to her hazel eyes.

“Depends on what it is.” The way she’s acting right now has me nervous.

“Do you love me?”

What the fuck kind of question is that? Of course I love her. She knows that.

“You know I do. Why would you ask that?”

“Do you trust me?” she asks.

What is it with these questions?

“Of course.”

“Then trust me enough to blindly make this promise.”

Damn, she’s hitting me hard. I trust her, but if this promise has anything to do with letting her go, I can’t keep it. That’s something I’d never be able to do. I don’t know what this promise is, but I’ll appease her for now. It’s notentirelylying, but I’ll decide if I keep the promise or not when it comes down to it.

I give her a small nod. “Okay, I promise.”

She slides her hands under my t-shirt and up to my scarred chest as her brows pull down in a frown. “Promise me that you won’t ever hurt yourself again, Greyson.”

Her words are like a blow. I’m in shock; I didn’t expect that to be what she’s worried about.

I don’t know if I can keep that promise. The cuts and the pain are second nature to me. Apart from her, they’re the only things that have ever given me any sort of comfort.

“I don’t think I can do that,” I whisper truthfully.

Desperation fills her beautiful eyes. “Greyson…”

“I’m sorry, angel. Pain was all I had when I didn’t have you. It was my life for nine years. I don’t know if I could stop that.”

“Would you at least try? For me.”

I can’t tell her no, especially right now in this warehouse when emotions are high. So I find myself wanting to give in.

“I’ll try… but nothing’s going to happen to either of us so we don’t have to worry about that. If things go awry today, you know I’d give up my life to save you.”

Her arms wrap around me, giving me a squeeze as she lays her head on my chest. “I love you.” Her voice is soft, like she’s already distracted by her thoughts.

I lean down to kiss the top of her head. Her body relaxes into mine, letting me know she’s feeling at least a little bit of comfort.

I can’t wait to get this over with and take her home, so I can hold her through the emotional rollercoaster that today will be. Killing is easy for me—I’ve been doing it since I was thirteen—but for Lainey, there’s no telling what kind of damage it’ll do.

I don’t know how long we stay like this, but we’re pulled from our paradise when the closet door is wrenched open by Thiago.

“It’s time. Come on,” he says, not seeming to care about finding us in here. Out of the three guys, he’s always been the one who was most accepting of me.I guess I won’t have to cut off his hand like I thought. Well, hopefully.

Lainey lets me go, and straightens out her clothes and hair. The loss of her warmth hurts worse than any cut.
