“You’ll be okay,” I reassure her, but part of me thinks I’m saying it for my own sake. Her expression tells me she’s not fully convinced, but she gives me a sweet smile and a nod. “Just stay put until I come to get you, Lainey. Okay?”

“Okay. Stay put, got it.” She turns toward Thiago, acting like she isn’t scared. “Let’s do this,” she announces, with false bravado.

Walking out this door, heading into this mission with my girl by my side is one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do. I want to take Sutton down, but I’m so close to just saying screw this and spiriting her far away from here. To keep her safe.

I need her to stay safe.

We head back out to the main room and I watch as she and Lya each throw on a Kevlar vest while they walk toward the room they’ll be hiding in. Lainey turns and gives me one last look, mouthing “I love you” before she disappears.

Not being able to see her anymore pulls my heart into a frenzy, but I take a deep breath, getting myself focused. This has to be executed perfectly.

Zep walks up and hands me a gun, plus a couple of extra loaded clips. This man is prepared for anything.I check the clip already inside, and tuck the gun into the waistband at my back as the others do the same.

We’re all dressed in fucking suits so we look the part. Obviously, Sutton already knows me, but in this little performance we’re putting on, the guys are my security detail. Hopefully, he buys this shit otherwise it could go south real fast.

Let’s just get this over with.

We’re all in place, so now we just wait for Sutton to show. He knows how important these deals are so it’s unlikely that he’ll be late.

A couple minutes later, the heavy metal doors swing open and in strolls Sutton and his three men. Predictable. Just like we planned. This is going to be easy.

I move from my spot and meet him halfway.

“Sutton. Good to finally conduct our business face-to-face,” I say steadily, taking his hand with a firm grip. Rage rises in me, thinking about how this man had Lainey right under my nose the entire time. I take a deep breath, trying to calm myself—I can’t lose it out here in front of his men, it would ruin everything.

Sutton shakes my hand, looking around the empty warehouse. “Omega. I’m glad to be working with you again. Didn’t think you’d be back in business so soon.”

“Yeah well, the older girls weren’t selling as well as I wanted, so I decided to pick up some young ones again. Gotta pay the bills, you know how it is.” The words make me sick. I never agreed with my father’s business. I kept it going to find Lainey, but that’s over now. Never again will I do something so despicable.

“Mmm, well where are they?” he demands impatiently, keeping his eyes narrowed on Zep, Rian, and Thiago.

“Back room.” I jerk my head in the direction of where I’m going to take him out. “Can’t just keep the little sluts out in the open.”

He chuckles. “You’re right about that.” Turning toward his men, he tells them, “I’ve got this taken care of. You wait out here.”

“Yes, sir,” they all murmur.

“You three, stay here and keep these guys company,” I order Zep, Rian, and Thiago. The fire in their eyes at my command lets me know they don’t take kindly to me telling them what to do. Their reactions give me a smug sense of happiness at being the one in control.

“Of course, boss,” Zep says, with a little bite behind his tone.

Sutton hasn’t mentioned Genesis yet. He must not want me to know that his most trusted man is dead. Knowing Lya and the guys, they will have made their ad untraceable, so he won’t have any idea who killed Genesis.

I lead Sutton down the wide corridor to the back room. I woke up this morning thinking I’d be the one avenging Lainey, but it turns out my little angel wants to do it herself. So now it’s my job to knock his ass out and tie him up, so she can destroy him.

“You know, I never found that girl you came looking for,” he says casually as we walk.

Why the fuck is he saying that to me? Is he an idiot? I basically threatened to fucking murder him if he didn’t find her, why would he just offer that up?

“Apparently, you have a death wish,” I tell him as we round the corner. Instead of replying, he remains silent next to me.

He’s too confident. Something’s not right.

Before I get the chance to pull my gun, something hard hits the back of my head, blurring my vision.

Fuck.

Pain erupts through my skull and I stagger, trying to steady myself, before turning toward Sutton. “What the hell?” I snap at him.
