“Something’s going on out there, and I need to go help. Stay here and we’ll come back for you, okay? Do you have the knife Zep gave you?” Her voice is strong, but her eyes are pleading with me to listen.

“No way, Lya. I know now’s not the ideal time for me to suddenly become brave, but I’m not letting you go out there alone.” Of course I don’t want to go out there either, but where she goes, I go. It’s as simple as that.

“Lainey, you’ve got no fighting skills. Zep has been training me for years—I can protect myself. But if I let you go out there and you get hurt, I won’t be able to live with myself. The guys wouldn’t be able to live with themselves, and most of all, Greyson will lose his shit again. Do you want that to happen?”

Damn, she has to hit me right in the heart with that statement, making it hard for me to argue.

I clench my jaw. “Of course not. Do you think I find excitement in the idea of being a human punching bag, or target practice for some asshole who trafficks girls? But I’m not going to sit by and be the scaredy-cat who had the chance to help my family, but didn’t. We don’t have time for this right now! Are we going or not?” I pull the knife out of my jeans and flick it open.

“Lainey, when we get home, I’m kicking your stubborn ass. Fine, let’s go. But you stay right next to me, and watch from every angle. Please don’t try to be brave... Being brave gets people killed.” Not a single part of her wants me to go out there, but she knows I’m damn well going, whether or not she agrees. I know it’s pretty fucking stupid for me to go, but if they’re in danger, I can’t just sit here. Some of Harvey’s men out there played into my pain and if I’ve got a chance to give it right back, I will.

“Aye, aye, captain.” I give her a salute and a cheeky grin. Right now is not the time for humor, but I’m freaking out so bad inside that it’s the only thing keeping me calm.

With a loud huff and an eye roll, she stalks over to the door, crouching low and slowly pulling it open. She peeks around the corner and nods her head to me, signaling it’s time to go. She pulls her gun out of her waistband, keeping her back tight against the wall. I mimic her actions, hugging the wall and keeping my knife close.

We carefully look around each corner as we get closer to the commotion. The last corner we look around shows us exactly what we’re up against. My breath lodges in my throat at the sight unfolding in front of us.

I can see Zep, Rian, and Thiago surrounded by at least thirty men.Where the hell did all these guys come from? We certainly didn’t plan for this. Harvey’s never taken this amount of men with him anywhere.

Zep’s punching the shit out of some guy on the ground, as they wrestle each other. Rian has a knife in each hand, slicing into anyone within reach, and Thiago has a gun pointed at his targets like he’s a sharpshooter.

Although they’re outmanned, they still look insanely graceful as they take out each person. They act like this is just another day for them, like these people just annoyingly got in their way. They’re certainly not freaking the hell out like I am right now.

Wait. Where’s Greyson?

I frantically look around, but neither him nor Harvey are anywhere to be seen. My heart is pounding, but at least I know Greyson’s not one of these dead or unconscious men on the floor.

It suddenly feels like I’m hyper aware of my surroundings as I start to panic about Greyson. I can hear every hit, shot, and slice that’s going on around that corner, and I’m beginning to wonder whether I should’ve listened to Lya and stayed behind.Am I cut out for this? Am I going to get in the way?

“Lainey! Snap out of it,” Lya whispers sharply. “Get your head together or go back to the room. You need to be focused and I can’t babysit you once we’re round this corner. Got it?” Her words are aggressive, but I get where she’s coming from.

Pulling myself together, I nod and try to focus my attention on what’s at stake. I need to do this for myself, I need to do this for all of the girls currently under Harvey’s control, and most importantly, I need to stop this from happening to anyone else in future. Rolling my shoulders back and popping my neck, I get my game face on, ready to sneak up on some of these assholes.

Lya looks back at me one last time, giving me the nod. This is it. This is what we’ve been waiting for.

Let’s go.

I round the corner with Lya, who immediately sneaks up on a guy and shoots him point blank in the back of the head.Holy fuck. She’s unfazed, making it look easy. The scream that tries to escape me dies in my throat as another man shifts his attention to us.

His eyes narrow, and a huge grin crosses his face. I recognize some of the men from Harvey’s security team, but others I’ve never seen before. This guy is a stranger. He’s tall, with dark hair and dark eyes, but all I can really stare at are the muscles bulging from his body. He could snap my neck with just his thumb and forefinger.

Lya raises her gun and aims it right at him. Just as she pulls the trigger, a body slams into both of us from behind, knocking us into the cold concrete and causing my knife to slide out of reach. Her shot missed the guy she was going for, but lodged into the shoulder of another. It’s not what we were going for, but it’s better than nothing.

The body on top of us tries to hold us down, but Lya pushes up from the ground and I’m able to roll over onto my back enough to throw a punch at the guy’s face. He groans in pain and blood drips from his nose onto my shirt, as he sits back on his knees.

“You fucking bitch. You’re going to pay for that.” He leans forward, sliding his hands around my neck. As he begins to squeeze, Lya takes the butt of her gun and knocks him out cold.

“Thanks,” I say quickly, looking at her, as we both scramble to our feet. I run over to my knife and pick it up, so I can have my protection back.

Lya and I continue to make our way through people, with her shooting them or throwing a knife at their throats if she doesn’t have a clean shot with the gun. I make my way punching whoever I can, but I haven’t used my knife yet. My fist throbs from the blows I’m landing on the guys who get close to me. The thought of feeling the blade slice through someone’s flesh still sends shivers down my spine, so for now, I’ll just help Lya however I can. I also don’t have a gun because I was nervous I’d get too trigger-happy and shoot the wrong person.

The more and more we go on, the more it seems like Harvey’s men multiply. They keep coming out of nowhere, leaving us outnumbered by a lot.

Just as I’m about to throw another solid punch, I’m pulled back into a hard body and I feel cold metal pressed to my temple.

“Stop what you’re fucking doing, or I’ll blow her brains out right here.” A loud booming voice echoes through the warehouse, startling me. A voice I know all too well. A voice I hear in my nightmares.

Every person goes still. Shudders roll down my spine, and bile rises up my throat at the feeling of Harvey’s hard cock digging into my back.
