Dex frowned. “How did you do that?”

“What?”

“The spell. How did you break it?”

I blinked at him. “Maybe I’m being a threat again,” I sneered.

Dex pursed his lips together, his jaw clenched. Without him countering me, I had nothing more to say. We walked in silence. I was furious, but as my adrenaline faded, the anger gave way to uncertainty, and then to fear. My stomach turned, and my hands became sweaty.

“Where are you taking me?” I asked.

Dex marched me down a set of stairs and through an entrance that led into a large vestibule designed to hold many people.

“The High Priestess,” he answered, telling me exactly what King Rainier had said. Clearly not the helpful type.

“And I don’t suppose you could let me go,” I tried. Dex only stared solemnly ahead. “Do you always do as you’re told?”

He glanced at me, but he didn’t say anything. He just kept walking, forcing me to follow.

The High Priestess. Maybe this female could give me some answers I needed. Like, how the hell I’d ended up here. And why I wasn’t allowed to leave, even when I was innocent?

Dex led me down a long, narrow hallway with doors on all sides. He opened one door and gestured for me to step in. I hesitated.

“Is this where you keep her?” I asked, glancing into the bland little room.

Low ceilings made it feel cramped, and a cot stood in the corner. The windows didn’t let in much light; they seemed shuttered.

“You’ll wait here while I find her.”

“No way,” I said. “I’m not getting locked upagain.”

Dex clenched his jaw and grabbed me by the arm. I tried to fight him, but my strength was waning. My adrenaline had faded, and I was exhausted. He pushed me into the room—not without care—and pulled the door shut behind me.

“Let me out!” I shouted, grabbing for a doorknob, but nothing was on my side of the door.

“I’ll be back for you,” Dex said and walked away.

I listened to his footsteps fade. Then, I turned around, my throat swelling shut, and tears stung my eyes. It frustrated me. I wouldnotcry. But hell, I was in a prison of sorts—yet again—and I was so tired of fighting.

I walked to the cot and sat down. It was narrow, and the springs creaked when I sat, but it was better than anything I’d slept on before. Exhaustion overcame me, and I couldn’t think straight anymore.

Everything hurt. My muscles screamed at me, and I felt like I was one giant bruise.

What would happen to me? Was I to be a prisoner forever?

I lay back on the cot, my muscles protesting. As soon as my head hit the mattress, my eyes drooped shut.

The monster flashed before me, and my body jerked. I looked around, but I was safe. The monster was dead, its blood all over me to prove it.

I was still alive.

I didn’t want to fall asleep. I had to stay on my guard, but sleep dragged me under, and I couldn’t fight it. My body was giving in. Giving up. Eventually, so did I.

I didn’t know how long I’d slept for. The sound of the door opening jerked me out of a deep slumber.

I sat up and rubbed my eyes.
