“At the very least, you could apologize for being wrong about me,” I said.

The King raised his eyebrows and looked at Dex, who shrugged his giant shoulder.

King Rainier laughed, and it was a beautiful sound—thick, velvety, smooth. It brushed against my skin, and I wanted to lean into it.

“I don’t know who you think you are, but—”

“You didn’t bother finding out, either,” I interrupted.

The King’s warm smile faded away, and those icy eyes pinned me.

“Do I have to remind you I’m the King?”

“TheFaeking,” I pointed out. “I don’t serve you.”

His jaw ticked. “No, but you serve the Fae, and they serve me. You’re a prisoner. I could have your head for talking back to me at all.”

I glared at him. It infuriated me that he’d treated me like this.

“You’re supposed to be a just King. That’s what they always said about you—the Fae who’d advocated for change since he was a young boy. Where is that king now?”

“Excuse me?”

“I know you challenged your father on everything.” I balled my fists.

Dex gaped at me. Lucia looked torn between indignation and shock.

I continued. “The King that stands before me doesn’t seem like someone who believes being fair is better than being feared. You just want to get rid of me—a pain, now that you didn’t have your father’s murderer, after all.”

Everyone stared at me, stunned at my speech. I glared at the King, defiant, willing him to counter me.

“I will not apologize for this,” King Rainier said tightly. “I don’t know what magic is at play here, and until I do, you’re to be regarded as a threat.”

“So, what else is new?” He was getting over this—overme. And once the entire thing bored him, what would become of me?

King Rainier nodded to Dex.

“Take her away…to the High Priestess.”

“Are you sure?” Dex asked.

“She’ll be able to figure out what’s going on here,” the King said.

I opened my mouth to protest. Did I have no say in this? I’d been hexed, wrongfully accused, nearly killed, and they didn’t want to hear my side of the story?

Before I could say anything more, Dex lifted his hand, and a spell danced from his fingers. It snapped my mouth shut as if he’d gagged me. I mumbled and fought the restraint, but magic was at work yet again.

Dex dragged me away. I glared back at the King before turning my face forward. Lucia, next to him, put her hand on his and said something in a low voice so that I couldn’t hear.

I continued to fight the magical gag as Dex took me away from the arena with the crowds who had become restless after the action. They hadn’t heard our conversation. We followed a path that led to the palace, and I noted where we were going so that I would find my way out when I broke free and ran. I would get my chance at some point. Ihadto.

All the while, I kept fighting the gag.

“If you fight it, it will just—”

The magic snapped, and I gasped.

“Are you still going to treat me like a prisoner, even when I did nothing?” I cried out.
