“Why would he report you? How much do have?”

“A hundred thousand,” I say as Hank’s phone rings.

“Holy shit,” I hear Sage mumble. “That’s a lot of money.”

“Kyle?” I hear Hank say.

“Yeah, it’s me.”

“I’ve been trying to call you. Your girlfriend wouldn’t pick up.”

“Yeah, she thought it was a wrong number. What the hell’s going on?”

“He got away from us. They lost track of him and then all of a sudden he showed up in Manhattan. You’re at her mom’s place, right? You need to stay there until—”

“I’m at restaurant. With my father.”

“What did you say?”

“My father is here at the restaurant. Sage’s mom took us to this place for dinner and my father showed up. At our table.”

“What the hell are you talking about?”

“He hired Sage’s mom to make him a painting. He was here to talk about it. He didn’t know I’d be here. He didn’t know I was dating Sage.”

“Shit! Where are you now?”

“In the hotel lobby that’s connected to the restaurant. My father’s in there with Sage’s mom.”

“Are you sure? He didn’t leave, did he?”

“He couldn’t have. The restaurant exits through the lobby. I would’ve seen him.”

“Kyle.” Sage nudges my arm.

I follow her gaze to the other side of the lobby and see my father coming out of the restaurant. He’s walking toward us.

A chill shivers down me. “Shit.”

“What is it?” Hank asks. “Do you see him?”

“Yeah. He’s coming toward me.”

“Run. Get the hell out of there.”

“I can’t.” I look around. “There’s nowhere to go. And if I ran, he’d track me down. Or his guys would.”

“I’ll get the police out there. Just stay where you are.”

“No! Don’t! The police would never believe my story. I can’t prove it. My dad would tell them I made it all up.”

My father makes his way through the groups of people in the lobby, slowly, methodically, like an animal approaching his prey. How did I go all these years and not notice he had this dark, evil side to him? Did he really hide it that well or did I just not pay attention?

“Go to your house,” Hank says.

“What?”

“Just do it. Go there with your father.”
