“Then I’m on his turf. Isolated. He’ll kill me for sure.”

“It’s not his turf. It was your house, too, until just recently. You know where he keeps his weapons, right?”

“Hank, I don’t have time to talk about this. My dad is just a few feet away.”

Our eyes have been locked this entire time, but my father looks away when some woman takes hold of his arm. She says something to him and smiles. He looks annoyed as he says something back.

Hank’s been talking but I didn’t hear what he said.

“Kyle?”

“Yeah, hurry up. My dad got stopped by a woman who seems to know him but he’s trying to get rid of her.” I watch as he pulls away from her and turns back to me, that evil grin on his face. “Shit, he’s heading this way.”

“Your brother’s there, right? At the house?”

“I don’t know. Probably. Why?”

“Use him as protection. Your father won’t harm you if your brother is around.”

“Why the hell would I even do this? What exactly am I supposed to do once I’m at the house?”

My father approaches Sage and me. “You two have been out here for quite awhile.” He looks at Sage. “Your mother would like you to join her. Go ahead. I’d like to have a word with my son.”

Without saying goodbye to Hank, I end the call and give the phone back to Sage.

“Kyle and I are done talking,” she says to my dad. “We were just heading back in.”

“I understand that, but I’d still like to have a word with him.” He smirks at me. ”And his name is Jonathan, not Kyle. I’m sorry he’s deceived you for so long.” He nods toward the restaurant. “Go join your mother. We’ll be in there shortly.”

“Go ahead,” I tell her. I can tell she doesn’t want to, but she can’t be part of this.

Once she’s gone, my father grabs my arm and yanks me back a few feet to the hallway that leads to the restrooms.

“SoKyle,” he says, emphasizing my fake name, “I hear you’ve been living in Kansas.”

“What else did she tell you?” I need to find out how much he knows. I hope Sage’s mom didn’t tell him much.

“That apparently you’re a writer.” He chuckles. “You made up quite a tale, didn’t you?”

“I learned how to lie from the best,” I say through gritted teeth. I yank my arm free. “So what’s your plan? Are your men waiting outside to kill me?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about. In fact, I don’t even know why you ran.”

“Your men held fucking guns to my head,” I say in a hushed tone. “You’re going to pretend you weren’t responsible for that?”

He looks around. “You’re clearly confused. I would never harm my own son.”

“You would if you thought I was going to rat you out to the cops. Destroy your little side business.”

“Let’s go home and discuss this.”

“There’s nothing to discuss. I’m leaving.” I turn to walk away but he grabs my arm and pulls me back.

“We’re going home.” He looks around to make sure no one is watching us, then slowly lifts his suit jacket, showing me the gun.

I’m not surprised he has one but it still sends a chill through me. I try to relax and act like it doesn’t bother me.

“You just said you’re not going to kill me,” I say, glaring at him.
