Chapter Nine

Tamara had heard aboutthe news from people who drop by the house. She knew Claudia would need an ear to help her out. All of that was put on hold when Naomi Wells showed up five minutes after Claudia came home. Claudia and Tamara were looking at Naomi with Whisper and smoke.

“At least she called and said she was coming this time, “Tamara said as she cooked dinner. “It’s probably best that she’s here so we can get this over with.”

“I know that academically you’re right, but she still makes me nervous. I think she’s just looking for some reason to take the babies from me. On top of that does it seem like she’s been coming around more often?”

Tamara stopped stirring her pot and agreed with Claudia.

“I agree that she does seem to be more vigilant and when she’s doing the home check, she seems distracted. Sometimes I’m not sure if she’s coming to check on them or if she’s coming to get some therapy herself,” Tamara said.

“So much has happened today I don’t know if I have the capacity to be kind to a woman who has threatened what I essentially look at as my kids,” Claudia said looking longingly at the pot Tamara was stirring. “Really, does everyone have to have problems on the days I do. I don’t have them often. I’d like to have those days exclusively to myself,” Claudia grouched.

Tamara stopped and looked at her friend.

“You didn’t bring it up when you walked into the door, so I didn’t want to. Are you ready to talk about it?”

Claudia shrugged her shoulders. Talk about the gorgeous man who was trying to up end her whole life? Maybe she would be better served trying to fix Naomi’s problems then trying to focus on Austin?

“Let’s work on one crisis at a time. The last thing I need is for Naomi to get wind of what’s going on and say that there’s too much change in my life for my babies.”

“I think Naomi would you stay out there for quite some time if we left her?”

Claudia grinned.

“She might but the longer she stays out there the longer I’ll have to make it up to the babies.” With that Claudia stood up from the table and went two back door. Naomi didn’t seem like a really bad person. The problem was, she and Naomi were just on two different sides of the equation. It probably didn’t help that when they first met each other for some reason they took an instant dislike to one another. Now though as time had passed you could say she had a strong reaction to Naomi at all. Now when she looked at Naomi she felt bad for her. As if Naomi could feel her looking at her, she looked up and Claudia waved her in.

“Do you mind if we talk alone?” Naomi asked.

Claudia was taken back but Tamara didn’t miss a beat. She wiped her hands on her apron and called the dogs to her. Claudia couldn’t believe that Tamara had just left. Normally Tamara was so much more protective and wanted to be there to hear every word Naomi said.

“Well, that was the quickest I have ever cleared a room,” Naomi said. “I truthfully expected her to put up more of a fight.”

“A fight?”

Naomi spread her hands out and shrugged.

“I’m not ignorant of how people see me. I realize I’m no one’s favorite person because I’m coming to investigate and make sure that the animals are well taken care of.”
