Page 54 of Loving Winter

While our relationship has gone back to a much more amicable, comfortable spot since we talked it out, I’m not sure how they might react to the idea of leaving Blackmoor. Not with me as their leader.

Before I have too much time to work myself up into a frenzy, Knuckles bursts through the side door, a broad grin on his face.

“It’s a beautiful day, boys!” he says, letting the heavy metal door slam behind him.

“What’s got you in such a good mood?” Rico asks, his eyebrow raising skeptically.

“Payday,” he brags.

We all exchange glances, confused.

“I won fucking Texas hold ’em last night andcleaned house,” he brags.

“Nice, man.” Dallas fist-bumps him. “So, when are you taking us out for a night on the town?”

“Fuck that.” Knuckles shoves Dally’s shoulder.

“All right, all right,” I interject, trying to wrangle them back in before they get out of control and the moment gets away from me. “Look, I need to talk to you guys.”

“Uh-oh,” Rico says, his eyes narrowing. “That’s never good. What mess of yours are we cleaning up this time?”

“Fuck off,” I growl, scowling at him. “No, really. I have something to discuss with you.” Leaning back against the blue Chevy, I wait for them to quit messing around.

“What’s up, man?” Dallas asks when they finally get their shit together and realize I’m serious.

“I’ve been talking to Mark about this, and he’s on board with it.”

The guys exchange looks.

“On board with what?” Rico’s eyebrow raises skeptically.

“On starting a new chapter of the Devil’s Sons north of here. Maybe somewhere near Boston.”

“You’re joking,” Knuckles says. “Mark wouldn’t be on board with that.”

“He is now that I’m leaving Blackmoor either way.”

The room fills with still silence.

“Is this about Winter?” Rico presses.

That same fucking question. I clench my fists, trying not to let my temper take control this time. “Yes.”

No one says anything again for a long moment.

“Well, kind of. She’s what got me thinking about this, but honestly, I think it’s something good for all of us.” I feel like I’m doing a terrible job of actually expressing what I’m trying to say.

“All of us?” Dallas just sounds confused.

“Okay, how about you stop fucking asking questions and let me just tell you what’s going on?”

Knuckles snickers behind his fist. “Sorry, Dad.”

I don’t know why that hits me as both comical and entirely too true. I haven’t even told the guys that Winter’s pregnant yet. Fighting to keep my smile from my face, I push off the hood of the car and stand tall before them.

“What I’ve beentryingto say is that Mark’s given me permission to open a new chapter of the Devil’s Sons, and I’m asking you boys to come with me. Before you give an answer, know that my offer would put you at the head of the new chapter as the senior members. I would name one of you as my vice president.”

“That means you’re planning on being president, then?” Rico asks. “Why not any of us?”
