His mother had the audacity to roll her eyes at him and smack his arm. “I already know that.”

He blinked. “You do?”

“Of course I do. Gerri Wilder is prolific for pairing fated mates together.”

He snorted, pulling away from her hands. “That’s true.”

She shook her head. “Is that all you were teasing me about?”

He grinned. “Yes.”

She shook her head again. “You are your father’s child.”

That made him laugh. “Hey, I keep Dad’s spirit alive.”

She lifted her glass, covering the bottom half of her face. Her eyes crinkled at him as she hummed.

When she put her glass down, she said, “I’m happy for you, honey. You deserve someone that’s going to take care of you just as much as you’re going to take care of her.”

The sweet words hit him right in the gut. “Thank you, Ma.”

“Of course, my love.”

“Maybe we can all get together this weekend. I do want you to meet her.”

His mother grinned. “You know I’m free.”

“All right, it’s a date then.”

SIXTEEN

DYLAN

“You take care of yourself, okay?”

Dylan squeezed his mother in a tight hug. “I will.”

When she pulled back, she ruffled his hair. “Call me about this weekend.”

He snorted, brushing a hand back through the tangled ends. “I will.”

“Good.” She blew him a kiss, getting into her car.

He waved as she sped off, waiting until she passed through the light and disappeared down the street, and her car was lost in the traffic.

He sighed softly to himself. He hoped that Rose was open to meeting his mother so soon. He knew that for humans, meeting the parents was a big step. Something he knew his mother wanted, but he wasn’t willing to push Rose’s boundaries over it. Even if his mother’s excitement was adorable.

Heading back to the parking garage, Dylan pulled out his phone to text Rose, noticing he already had a text waiting for him.

He smiled, opening it.Hey, I can’t make it tonight. Some things came up. Sorry.

He blinked and stopped in his tracks, re-reading the text over and over. That didn’t sound good. It wasn’t like Rose to text him so … callously. He scrolled back through their messages, taking in the over-exuberant way that she used emojis and elongated her sentences flirtatiously.

It was nothing like the short and simple text he’d just received.

He texted back,Everything okay?

While he waited for an answer, he made his way through the garage, spotting his car only a few rows over from the entrance. Maybe she didn’t feel well, and that’s why her texting seemed off. She probably didn’t have the energy and simply wanted to update him.
