CHAPTER 50

LEO

Leo rolled his shoulders, waiting for the elevator to arrive at his floor. After making the phone call, he searched for Cassandra, becoming worried when he couldn’t find her. He should never have left her alone.

He rushed to his front door, punched in the code, and pushed it open.

Cassandra stood in the entryway holding her bags, her cheeks wet with tears. His body surged with panic. Whatever had happened, he was afraid he wouldn’t be able to fix it. “Where are you going?”

“To a friend’s house.” She shoved past him.

“You’re not leaving.” Leo took her arm as she passed. “You’re going to stay here and tell me what’s wrong.”

“Let go.” She tried to wrench her arm away, but he held it tighter.

“No.” He pulled her back close to his face. He’d never seen her so determined.

“You’re scaring me!” she shouted, her eyes wide.

The last thing he wanted to do was frighten her. He released her arm. “Talk to me. Tell me why you’re upset.”

“I can’t do this right now. I need to think.”

“Think about what?” His fear boiled to the surface, ready to explode.

She glanced up at the ceiling, blinking back more tears. “Us.”

“Okay, talk to me aboutus.” He moved closer to her. “Did I do something to upset you?”

“You promised to stay by my side, but you left to take a call. You promised me you’d be right back, but you weren’t.I looked everywhere for you.” Tears streamed down her cheeks. “And when I finally found out where you were, Daniel told me you didn’t want to be disturbed.”

Shit. When he returned the call, he wanted to do it in the most private place possible. Daniel did exactly what he’d asked him to do, but he hadn’t expected the call to take so long. “It was important.”

“What was so important you had to leave me?”

He’d given his word to Ben and the informer he wouldn’t discuss their plan for a takeover with anyone, and that included Cassandra. It gutted him to withhold anything from her because it felt like a lie.“I can’t tell you right now, but I will. I promise.”

“You promise?” she asked, her voice rising. “Your promise is worthless,” she yelled.

“Look, Cassandra—”

“No, you look, Leo. I have some serious doubts about us.” She shook her head, biting her lip. “You’re keeping secrets from me, and I don’t like it. I need some space from you. I don’t know what’s real and what isn’t anymore.”

This shift did not happen out of thin air. Someone must have said something to her. There was only one possibility.

“Malcolm talked to you, didn’t he?”

She stared at him but didn’t answer his question.

Leo ran a hand over his face. How could he make her believe him? “I told you not to talk to him,” he said through clenched teeth. “This is what Malcolm does. He spins lies and inflicts damage on other people.”

Cassandra jabbed a finger at him, her eyes blazing in fury. “If it pisses you off that Malcolm talked to me, then it’s your fault because you weren’t there to stop it!”

It was his fault, and he was going to have to take her wrath. “What did he say to you?”

She ignored him and took a step to the door.

He took her left hand. “Keep the ring on.” It was just a ring, but he needed the physical proof she still loved him.
