Cassandra snatched her hand away. “Malcolm said it was supposed to be his, not yours.”

“He’s lying,” Leo said, trying to keep his anger under control. “My grandfather gave it to me.”

“Why didn’t Malcolm get it? He’s the oldest.”

“His mother convinced him to buy something new.” He leaned forward to catch her eye. “A few hours ago, Gramps was thrilled when he saw you wearing the ring. If you want verification, we can go back to the party and ask him again.”

She kept her eyes averted from his.

“What else did Malcolm tell you?”

“He said you’re using me like you did Whitney.”

“Not true. I never used Whitney. What else?”

“He said you had to leave the country because you abused her, and she could’ve filed legal charges against you. Is that true?”

“Another lie.” Motherfucker. “I explained this to you already. Whitney believed all the lies Malcolm told her about me. Anything else?”

“He said you’ve never been satisfied with one woman.”

“What?” he shouted. “Malcolm is deliberately messing with you. Yes, I’ve done that in the past, but that’s not true anymore. You know this.” He couldn’t wait to get his hands on that asshole.

She blinked and looked away. Whatever Malcolm had told her was a warmup to what was coming. He was sure of it.

Leo’s head was ready to explode, but he needed to know everything. “That’s not all Malcolm told you. Tell me all of it.”

Her lower lip trembled. “He played a recording of a phone call he had with you.”

“What did I say?”

“You said you were using me to get your hands on my Crete property. You’re trying to take over Sutton Properties and my father’s company.” She looked him straight in the eye. “Is that true?”

The bottom collapsed from his stomach. He remembered that call. This was a catastrophe.

“Is it true?” she shouted. Her face flushed in rage.

“No, it’s not true.”

“It was your voice, Leo. I heard what you said.”

“I can explain.”

She closed her eyes and pinched the bridge of her nose. “So, it was you.”

“It is my voice, but…” He shoved a hand through his hair. “I was being sarcastic.”His chest tightened with anxiety, and he couldn’t think clearly.

Gulping back tears, she pulled the ring off her finger and placed it on the entry table.

This couldn’t be happening. “You mean everything to me,” he said, taking in a long breath. “I’ll do anything for you, give you anything you need. You know that’s true.”

Her lip trembled with emotion as she turned toward the door. It shattered him that he’d done this to her.

She was leaving, and this was his last chance. “Cassandra, please. None of what Malcolm told you is true. And I didn’t leave the party to call another woman.” He struggled to find a way around this but couldn’t. He would have to trust her to keep this secret because Cassandra meant more to him than taking over a company. He would tell her everything. If he didn’t have her, he had nothing. “Okay, I’ll tell you, but I need to have your trust before—”

“Stop it,” she shouted.

“I’m trying to tell you.”
