I don’t say anything to her because any words I speak now would be a lie. It’s not okay that she didn’t trust me to find another way. Not okay that she’s risked my life, Fin’s life, and Heelean’s life in this martyred suicide mission.

Taranus narrows his gaze at me then glances at Ember before barking out a laugh. “Unbelievable. You already have a mate, yet you dare to claim mine?”

“Ember is not your mate,” I growl. “Not in any way, shape, or form.”

“She is mine by right!” he roars back. “Lloren has Seen it!” he repeats, his fractured voice evidence of just how fucked he is should she not become a fae.

“A mate bond is about more than power, you sick bastard,” Fin growls. “You both feel it, the inability to survive without the other.”

“Kill him already!” Taranus roars the order, and Lloren raises her hand as black magic swirls around her fingers.

“With pleasure.” She makes a move toward him but stops, gasping for breath. It’s then I look down and see the scarcest hint of silver sticking out from her gut.

She falls forward, gasping, and Heelean glares down at her, holding the bloodied blade still in hand. “You see that coming?”

Taranus roars.

Conary brings his blade up to block Fin’s.

And I head straight for my brother.

“Close the portal!” Taranus roars.

Lloren grips her abdomen and backs away before raising her hand. Heelean flies backward and into a tree then falls to the ground, unmoving. Lloren scrambles toward the portal, but I keep my focus on Taranus.

I can’t kill him—not yet.

But I can restrain him until the bond is broken.

“You going to kill me, brother?” he snarls as I close in on him.

“Not yet.” I raise my fist and slam it into his jaw. It shatters like glass, and he cries out, stumbling backward. “You always were the weak one. Do you know how many times I talked Ridley out of kicking your ass when we were children?”

I continue moving toward him, and the sound of metal against metal is an echo in my mind. One of Taranus’s men rushes toward me, and I raise my blade, blocking the blow, then drop down and drive it into his gut.

He falls, coughing and sputtering, and I don’t break stride as I turn back to Taranus.

Kill him and rule. She is dying, anyway. The dark thought seeps into my mind, and I instantly shake it off.

Because even now while my light and dark magic linger together as one, sacrificing Ember is not an option.

No matter how fucking pissed I am.

“Raffe!”

I whirl as Fin calls my name, only to see him on his knees with blood seeping through his tunic.

“Bring. It. Down!” Taranus orders.

Lloren nods, raises her hand—

Conary stumbles toward the portal with Ember in hand. “Rafferty!” She kicks out, trying to break free, and I rush toward her.

Her frantic fighting is no match for Conary’s strength, though, as he meets my gaze and grins. “She’s mine now. I’ll be back for my throne.” He jumps through, and Lloren’s magic pummels the portal.

“No!” Taranus roars. “Stop!”

But it’s too late.
