Because it would mean I experienced true, destined love at least once in my life. And what is lighter than that? What is more pure than true love?

“Are you okay?”

“Concerned about Paulina and the others. Them not being here has the potential to put us at risk.”

“Maybe they got held up,” she repeats.

Or perhaps Paulina was captured.

Perhaps they all were.

Or the camp was overthrown.

The dark possibilities are endless, and I do my best to force my thoughts back to the present. There is nothing I can do about any of those. All I can hope for is that Ember and I are safe right where we are—for now.

“Let’s hope that is all that kept her,” I reply and press my lips to the top of her head.

“I’m sorry I made you bring me out here. In hindsight, it was foolish.”

“You only asked to leave the tent. It was I who wanted the privacy of leaving the camp.”

“Privacy, huh?” she turns her head up to look at me, and I smile down at her.

“I do enjoy being alone with you.”

“And here I thought I frustrated you.”

“That too,” I reply. “But only because I cannot breathe without you.” She swallows hard, her breath hitching, and I stroke the side of her face. Ember’s eyes flutter closed, and she all but melts into my hand. “You’ve no idea the things you make me feel,” I tell her. “The way you call to even the darkest parts of me.” I leave out the fact that it’s those dark parts that terrify me because they want to devour her—because giving them any power seems foolish.

And in these moments with Ember, I want only the light.

Darkness begins to descend on us, and my stomach churns with unease. Being trapped out here at night is hardly the best possible outcome.

Something whizzes by my ear.

I wrap my arms even tighter around Ember as itwhooshesback, nothing but a wave of air against my face.

“What was that?” she whispers.

“I don’t—”

“What in the bloody fook are ye’ doin’ out ‘ere? Do ye’ wanna’ die?”

Falcon. The pixie comes to a stop in front of us, his cock still on full display. “We haven’t much of a choice,” I tell him.

“And why is that? Cat have ‘yer wings?”

I swallow hard.Kill him.“Something like that,” I reply, doing my best to ignore the rush of dark energy.

“Hi,” Ember greets, and Falcon’s eyes drift to her. When they do, they widen, and he beams down at her.

I want to rip his nuts off and make him eat them.

“’Ello, lovely lass, and what a lovely lass indeed ye’ are.”

“Ember,” she introduces, holding out a hand.

Falcon grins at me then reaches down to press his much smaller hand against hers. “Falcon,” he replies.
