“My brother may know of a way to save her now that the bond with Taranus is broken. Go find Bea. She can get to him.”

Wally nods and dematerializes.

As soon as we’re alone again. I grip the soiled dress and tear, shredding it from her body. Ember’s eyes close tightly, and tears slip from the corners.

“Fuck, Ember.”

Bruises and lacerations cover her delicate body. Pale flesh marred from the hands of a woman I once believed I loved.

“Even if it kills me, Ember, I will end her for this.” Body shaking with rage, the dark energy seeps back into my brain. I try like hell to shove it down, but—Ember’s hand goes to my arm, and I stare down at it.

Her touch caresses the light within me, bringing me back to focus. Not able to suffer the idea of her sitting in her own waste a moment longer, I lift her and carry her over to the bath. I set her inside the warm water before stripping out of my own clothes and climbing in behind her.

She rests her head back against my chest and closes her eyes as I use a cloth to wash away as much as I can. But I know, from experience, what she suffered there will not be so easily cleansed.

They tortured her. Left her to die in her own waste, and removed her tongue as punishment.

“I’m so sorry,” I whisper again.

She wraps her delicate fingers around my arm and shifts her body so she’s buried against my chest. Then, she begins to sob. And the sound of her pain is a razor to my heart.
